    Letter to the FDA by Members of Congress

     The letter was sent by Senator *** Durbin and Representative Rosa DeLauro. They gave the FDA 15 days to respond to their questions;     [linkhttp://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/Durbin-Menu-Foods-letter-3-26-07.pdf]http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/Durbin-Menu-Foods-letter-3-26-07.pdf[/link];

     I particularly like the last question, which asks," what changes in current law or funding levels are needed so that the FDA can better regulate the pet food industry?"

      Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Domestic Policy on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Menu Foods;  [linkhttp://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/Kucinich-letter-Menu-foods.pdf]http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/Kucinich-letter-Menu-foods.pdf[/link] . In the letter he asks Menu Foods a total of 15 questions that he wants answers to, and also wants them to provide his committee with all "internal documents, correspondence, e-mail, records, data and information, as defined in the attached instructions for responding to the Oversight Committee document requests relating to this incident and to nutritional information or purity testing on all Menu Foods pet food products."

    Wow. I suppose it would be too much to hope for that the responses are made public.

    The FDA probably has to answer, but does Menu? Are they obligated to report to Congress?

       I wouldn't see the point of the committee contacting Menu Foods if the company didn't have to respond. They're asking for some pretty detailed information, too.

    Without a subpoena I doubt Menu Foods has to answer anything.  Also, Kucinich is a professional politician (he's was my Congressman) running for President in 2008.  His intentions may be pure, but I wouldn't doubt this has some grandstanding to it.

      I'm sure you're right about the grandstanding, but Menu would look bad to the public if they didn't comply, and they may lose some of their clients as a result.
