    Lets talk about greenies....

I loved greenies and my dogs loved greenies.. but they had HORRIFIC DIAHRAEA ON GREENIES.....So I stopped using those quite some time ago..... would love to hear some other experiences....

I never did understand all the hoopla about something THAT costly.  And then I started seeing reports of all kinds of problems, like explosive diaherra, blockages, obstructions, choking, blah, blah, blah.  Not long ago someone posted a report of a number of deaths due to greenies.  So, no greenies in my house, now or ever.  But, I also don't use rawhides.  I use HARD rubber bones, real marrow bones or rmbs for my dogs chewing pleasure.  The bones keep their teeth clean and pretty and their breath fresh...well, except for the occassional poop snagging incident.

Sally just enjoys chewing them into large, foot piercing chunks that she then leaves lying about the house-therefore we do not give them.

Willow really liked them but I was concerned after reading all the obstruction stories and problems others had had with them.

So, I started buying her the Greenie bits made for small dogs and puppies to sprinkle on her food.  I thought she'd be safe with those, she weighs almost 50 lbs.

Well, one night DH called and said she had vomited, not from the Greenies but get this one. . .she had eaten the Greenie bits three days before and there they were!  So, after that I stopped them completely.

Unfortunately, she doesn't like many things and those she did like but it's not worth the risk.  I feel so bad whenever I pass those new Greenie cookies but I know they aren't good for her.  :)

I don't have any personal experience with Greenies, but, as those links show, there are a lot of dangers to them, diarrhea probably being the least of them.

Emma, who weighs in at 16 pounds, could eat a large greenie (for dogs over 50 pounds) in less than 5 minutes, as a puppy. I quit using them a LONG time ago.

I've just never been willing to risk it. By the time I actually realized what they were and what their purpose was, I had already heard of the dangers. I have a few dogs that are not only aggressive chewers, but also scarfers/gulpers. Just not worth the chance for me and my crew.

O/T but Lori, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your sig. with Willow. How did you do it??

So BEAUTIFUL to see everyone's furbabies here! That's one plus of this new site! The photos look bigger and clearer for some reason. [:)]

    Greenies:
I used to give them to my Tzu, and she went WILD for them! lol But after all the reports of dogs dying, I stopped giving them to her. I threw away a brand new pack of about 6! But, they were just too risky. She, too, is a gulper. [sm=rolleyes.gif]  I think our house guests must think we NEVER ever feed her...with the way she carries on around food and treats. sheesh

Laura, I think I used photo draw.  Thank you! :)

After the most recent lawsuit going on the owner of the animal hospital I work at took them off the shelves.  They are now in the pharmacy and we make sure that if people ask for them we let them know the risks.  But where there are is kind-of hidden so it's the out of site out of mind thing I think because noone ever asks for them.  We still have the cat bits on hanging in our display though (odd...).

I give my girls the petite greenies sliced down the centre to make them even smaller.I would NEVER,EVER give any dogs those large or jumbo sizes, they are ridiculously huge and they would easily be able to get large chunks off. I've never seen dire rear, green poop, vomit with undigested greenies in it or anything negative in my dogs after eating greenies. However i have cut down on the amount  i give them since reading these stories, which have made me a bit paranoid.

If i lived in the US i probably wouldnt bother giving them as you guys have so many better treats to choose from, however we have a choice of greenies, bully sticks and purina type crap. They wont eat bully sticks and i wont give them purina garbage,so it doesnt leave me with much choice [&:]
