One Big Risk with Raw/Homecooked

sweet potato is a much better choice than white potato. It has the carbs you want, plus lots of other good nutrients. White potatoes have very little to offer in the way of nutrition aside from starch.

No doubt -it benefits me too. Unfortunately they don't come in big sacks for about $3.00.  I have yet to find a bulk source of sweet potatoes.  Of course the idea is that I'm reducing the carb.

At Thanksgiving time I bought 150 pounds of the darned things and processed and froze them for my homecooked. They were 44 cents a pound.  This weekend SavALot had them for 33 cents a pound.....another 100 pounds is waiting to hit the freezer.  I'm thinking I MIGHT plant some of my own this year.  If you WATCH for the sales you can stock up IF you have a deep freeze.

    Glenmar,

I remember you telling me this and I was inspired to keep an eye out. But so far no luck. I've been to the warehouse club, and to regular grocery stores. I don't know where else to look (I live in Adams county PA and work in Frederick, MD).

Do you have a SavALot anywhere near you?  Or an Aldi?  Usually you can get some good savings there.  But they are RARELY advertised.  I know that I found a SavALot closer to us by looking for a website for them.

    re: buying fruits/veggies in bulk:
I asked at the farmer's market where 'the produce and food auction' was. They told where, when and how much the bidders card was ($4.00 per auction). Heck, they even gave me directions and a warning to go 30 mniutes early for previews. My girlfriend and I went in on a bushel of sweets for 2.50. Got the world's best tomatos for $4.00/bushel. You just have to take it that day, so bring a big trunk/truck.

I also found out that the county extension/agriculture office will provide this info (at least around here in S.E. VA) in a booklet. It lists all farm stands, farm markets, auctions, etc. of farmers licenced to sell produce.

The closesest Savalot is in Baltimore, MD about 40miles. However, I will look in to speaking to my Ag extension about where I can get bulk produce.

Per Glendas comment.., I think you need to watch for the peak season Sales....... for the most part.. fall... from halloween thru christmas... but i see them occasionally throughout the year too... kinda like cranberry sauce.. greatest amount of sales during that holiday window....

Cranberry SAUCE??    Yuck!!![:D]  DH seems to like that stuff that is jellied with can marks on it...but since he is diabetic, I make my own version of it.  Cranberry sauce in a can is like using canned PUMPKIN to us old folks!!

Glenda, has he ever tried the whole berry cranberry sauce in a can?  Much better than the jelled roll. And as for pumpkin [:D] the only thing I can do with a real pumpkin is carve it.

Mr. Sugar High doesn't LIKE the whole berry stuff, he likes the yucky jellied stuff.  But, either one in the can is too high sugar for him, so he has to settle for the homemade jelly stuff made with equal for recipes.......

I wouldn't even TRY to do anything other than carve the BIG pumpkins.....but pie pumpkins are a whole 'nother story.  No harder than baking a squash!
