Gulped a chicken thigh

• Gulped a chicken thigh chelsea_b Posted : 1/24/2007 1:32:57 PM Well, so I was just bagging up raw chicken thighs to throw in the freezer, and Jaz was sitting next to me (75 pound pit bull), so I gave him one, sort of expecting him to lick it a few times and leave it, since he's not used to raw stuff or bones, but he cruched it once and swallowed. Should I be worried, or is he fine? I'm just not used to that. Cherokee's the most meticulous chewer, but will only lick at raw chicken, and for some reason I expected Jaz to be similar. He's not! He's acting totally normal, running around like a wild man. Any reason to be worried, or am I just a worrier? I'd prefer no totally anti-raw replies, but I realize this is a public forum, and I'll get what I get. I just couldn't think of who to PM, so here it is... • brookcove Posted : 1/24/2007 1:42:43 PM Crunch and gone on a 75 pound dog would make me think, hmm, that will be the last of THAT kind of bone, but it wouldn't make me run to the vet. Maggie does this all the time - I'll forget and give her a really crunchable bone and she'll essentially swallow it whole. She's one of the ones I've had the opportunity to see her insides on film shortly after a meal and there was NOTHING in there after eating a whole chicken quarter about three hours previously. • jenhuedepohl Posted : 1/24/2007 1:47:09 PM I wouldn't worry. Just keep an eye on him and if he starts vomiting, has diarrhea or acts like he's in pain call the vet. Raw bones don't splinter into sharp pieces and chicken bones often completely digest. I don't usually panic over these things, my dogs have eaten a truly mind-boggling amount of things that passed with no troubles. I did get conerned when Lucy knocked a glass dish of brownies from the TOP OF THE REFRIGERATOR (who thinks that their dogs will get up there?) and ate the brownies from the broken dish. I was pretty sure she must have eaten some glass slivers. There was even blood on the broken dish from where she was licking the pieces. But everything came out fine! []    He's still perfectly fine, like I figured he would be. I'm really not bone-phobic, I was just shocked at how quickly it was gone. Crunch and gulp. I'm not used to that. Cherokee takes 20 minutes to eat a little short rib. [8|]    Plus Jaz isn't my dog. I told my sister that I dropped the chicken, and he grabbed it before I could. Shhhh!
