    New food for allergic dog

I'm currently feeding our cockapoo Canidae ALS dry kibble for about 1 year now.  Well it seems like he has a food allergy and after eliminating all his usual treats it seems like its the Canidae food.  This is really unfortunate as he loves the food and it's reasonably priced as well.  He's been scratching his face alot lately.  From looking at his skin we see some dry spot but nothing bad like blood or red marks.  Last time we took him to the vets she said it probably is a food allergy.

Was wondering which food I can switch him too that could him his allergy problem.  I was thinking of Natural Balance or Wellness.  Any suggestions would be helpful

    thanks

Try to find something that has as few ingredients as possible so you can figure out exactly WHAT he is allergic too. We use the Canidae ALS ourselves and really like it. But since it has so many ingredients, it can be hard to narrow down something that has completely new ingredients.

I'd try something like the Wellness Simple diets or Wellness Fish & Sweet Potato. There are also California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato (but it does have herring like Canidae). Check your local pet stores and bring the ingredient list of the Canidae with you. Try to find a food whose main protein & carb ingredients are different and then give it a few weeks to see if there is any reaction.

    Good luck!

Canidae has a simple lamb and rice diet that you might try. It'd probably be available through the same folks you get your regular Canidae from....

How long has it been since you took the treats out of his diet? It can take up to 12 weeks to see improvements from food allergies. If its only been 2-3 weeks, then I say wait a little bit longer. If its been more than 6 weeks, Natural Balance has some excellent allergy formulas, and they would be my first choice. Select a formula with ingredient your dog has never had before. If you can't find an appropriate formula, then you'll need to talk to your vet and try a veterinary prescription food.

If you do a diet trial, make sure its a true diet trial. No flavored medications (heartguard), no training treats that aren't the identical to his kibble, no counter surfing, no picking up anything on walks, no special treats from visitors or other family members, and no chew toys with flavorings of any kind. Stick to the diet for the FULL TWELVE WEEKS.

If your dog has any secondary infections (yeast or bacteria) you will need to get these under control as soon as possible, they will prevent you from being able to determine if the new diet plan is helping or not.

I went to the petfood store and was deciding between the Wellness and Natural Balance allergy foods and then remembered that Canidae just came out with the simple lamb & rice formula.  I decided to try this out first as it only has the 1 source of protein as opposed to the other Canidae which had chicken, turkey, lamb and fish.  Hopefully this will work if not then that'll narrow down the choices and i'll switch to either Natural Balance or Wellness.  Thanks for the advice
