What do show dogs eat?

The show dog world is very, very cut throat and i think some hard core showers will say and do anything if it's to benefit their dogs and get them recognised.....

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,or benefit themselves without benefitting their dogs!!!!   [:@]

I have no idea what the folks have to sign, etc, but I h ave never heard any of them say on TV that they feed such and such a brand (to fit the sponser's brand)   Most of the ones on my golden forums who have ever commented feedeither purina or nutro to their show dogs.  Ssame with breeders.

Most breeders I know feed only Eukanuba.  Eukanuba sponsers the dog shows, helps out with the National specialities by providing tents, tables, prizes, toys and much much more I couldn't even begin to cover.  Eukanuba also offers breeders puppy packs and brochures for new puppy owners that looks great for a breeder to send home with a new owner.

Well I'm a breeder, show on occasion, and do feed Eukanuba as the main diet. But not because they sponsor prestegious shows, give me puppy packs for new owners or have a nice breeder rewards program. All of the afformentioned IS true, but not at all why I feed it. I also feed other brands of kibble, usually Evolve, and do supplement with raw or leftovers. I don't rely on company incentives to entice or convince me to feed their product. My current litter will be sent off to their new homes with Euk's puppy pack, but the last litter was sent with samples of Evolve that I scooped out of my own bag. No free puppy packets. I also send pups home with feeding tips and recipes for quick, no hassle cooked meals and reading suggestions for books that promote raw or homecooking.
Results, results, results! A food is only as useful as the results it produces, and it need to produce consistantly. That translates to all my dogs need to be able to thrive on the same feed, so thats why I feed Eukanuba. If the holistic feed had worked as well as Euk does, I'd have continued feeding it to the show/performance dogs as well as the pups, regardless of whether or not it offered a breeder reward's program. If doing all raw or homecooked gave me the best results, I'd go with that (but both those methods of feeding fell short for my dogs). Personally I don't know any breeder who'd feed something the dogs did poorly on or that they didn't fully believe in just for the rewards incentive. Its nice to save $, so I'd be foolish to not be a part of Euk's breeder program, but will never allow the incentives of a food company to determine what I feed.

I have never even tried Eukanuba because for 5 decades our dogs have done great on Purina and i think the most important thing is to feed what works for our dogs. Your pups are sure cute.  My sister has an elderly beagle named Jazz.  For a while she was over weight and they called her Butter Beagle,  but I told them they really needed to get the weight off as she has gotten old and h as a little arthritis and they did slim her down a lot.

The breeders I worked with (bichon/small breeds) fed Eukanuba, Canidae, Bil-Jac usually.  One makes a cooked meat/garlic/oatmeal breakfast for his dogs :)

When I showed, I switched around a lot looking for that "one" food, the perfect one... I still look LOL

excuse me if this isn't totally on topic, but...

Does anyone know what the word "Eukanuba" means?  Or "Iams" for that matter?

Quoting from the puppy care manual in my puppy starter kit:

"In the 1940s, jazz was evolving and with it, its own unique language. Eukanuba (Yoo Can Noo Bah) was one word that grew out of the jazz culture. It was reserved for something that was 'the tops' or 'supreme' - whether it was the latest song or a fad car.
In the 1950s Paul Iams ..... was looking for a memorable name for his new dog food formula ..... drawing upon his love of jazz, he named the product Eukanuba."

One of the corgi breeders I interviewed before getting Darwin, fed Bil Jac "dry" and Natura "wet".  Another fed Science Diet.  All the pups and their parents appeared to be fine.  FYI, I feed Darwin holistic kibble and canned from a number of brands and he is fine.

I only have my Pro Plan sheets from 2003-2004 in my binder right now.  Our stats are as follows for show dogs.  Out of the top 100 all breed champions, Pro Plan fed 64 of them.  Iams/Eukanuba fed 12 combined on that list.  The rest made up all the other brands.  When they came out of the ring, they were asked what do you feed and 64 fed Pro Plan.  I have the list of each breed and their names.  Also in the Eukanuba Cup Dog show, 4 out of the 7 winners in 03 fed Pro Plan, not Eukanuba.  Including the winner.  These are stats that Pro Plan is proud of.  I know are numbers are still over 50 percent, but won't state them without the proof in hand.  I like stats in my possession first!  Despite what anyone thinks, Pro Plan dogs look great.  They have great coats.  Excellent muscle mass and those two things alone make for a great show dog.  See attached my dog Jax, he is turning 10 and I think he looks fantastic for his age even though he is plump and has a Zinc Responsive Dermititis, which makes his nose crusted and his tears are draining black now days.  Never had it till age 7.  But to me he is gorgeous for a senior man.

Wolfie's breeder fed Science Diet....they were big into agility stuff in addition to conformation.  My parents dog's breeder fed Bil-Jac (English Cockers), and my in-laws dog's breeder fed Eukanuba (Boston Terriers).

He does look great for an "old man" (as we call our Buck who will be 12 on Feb. 8).

I have in the past fed Pro Plan and Diamond. I now feed Nature's Variety and suppliment real meat as well as suppliments from Nature's Farmacy.

I was very satisfied with the Pro Plan and Diamond in the past but when my dogs didn't want to eat I knew there were changes and so I changed. I've never thought in the past that my dogs didn't excell on what they were eating but on that note, dogs have survived on Gaines Burgers [:'(]
