Dog food Recipe PLEASE!?

    Dog food Recipe PLEASE!?

I am so confused about dog food right now. I really want to homecook for my dog, but I don't know where to begin. I have bought books on homecooking but they all say that kibble should be included as well in order to provide all the nutrients. I have no idea how to balance the protein and calcium levels in a food. Right now I am just putting a heap of homecooked meat and veggies on my dog's kibble and I am worried that it is unbalanced. I would like to not have to feed her any kibble at all.

I know a lot of you idoggers homecook, so would you mind sharing what you feed your furkids and what supplements you give them? I am basically looking for a recipe that is balanced, healthy, and that I can switch around the protein sources if I need to.Also, I would like it to relatively simple and easy to make for a busy person like me.[;)]
    Thanks

PM Glenda. She has a (doggie-nutritionist approved and tweaked) recipe that she'll share. I used it for Cherokee for a few months, and actually just made a small batch again. Also, I hear Monica Segal has a good homecooked recipe booklet. I have her raw food and enhancing commercial diets booklets. The latter's okay, the former a little complicated. I bought them from [linkhttp://www.sitstay.com/]www.sitstay.com[/link], but you can also buy directly from [linkhttp://www.monicasegal.com/]www.monicasegal.com[/link]. I think I'm gonna buy the homecooked one soon, and/or maybe the K9 Kitchen book.

I did a sort of elimination diet for Cherokee for a while with raw ground beef, and raw ground up veggies, plus ground eggshells for calcium, an occasional beef rib, and a few supplements. She did quite well on that, but I'm not sure it was balanced for the long haul. I just needed to get my dog off kibble, and that was easy enough. Maybe you could do something like that for Jetta, til you do more research and find out how to properly formulate a diet for long term. I'm still working on that. [:)]

    Hope this helps.

I have the cooked recipe booklet from Monica Segal and it's as complicated as chelsea's raw booklet, but that's because the recipes use various foods to achieve the correct nutrient balance and don't use too many supplements. There is a recipe for every weight category, from 10 pounds to over 90 pounds and they follow the NRC guidelines. You can't change anything in the recipes besides substituting a few green vegetables or you'll effect the nutritional balance. So, the recipes in the booklet aren't simple but they aren't that bad, and each recipe is for a whole week's worth of meals. You could pick a convenient time each week and prepare a week's worth of food for Jetta, freezing each day's dinner in a seperate container. Please be careful about the source for the recipe you decide to use; it really must be properly balanced or your dog may suffer in the long run. A dog can build up enough mineral reserves on kibble to remain healthy looking for a while if changed to an unbalanced cooked or raw diet, but eventually the reserves will run out and the dog's health will suffer.

Why freeze it? I leave mine in the fridge, in a big, commercial pan, with a scoop[:)]

I have the same booklet Janice has from Monica Segal and found it a little daunting to figure out.  I also have Glenda's recipe which looks good, easy and well-balanced.  If money were no object though, I think I'd have Monica Segal develop a recipe specifically for my dogs based on their weight, breed, health issues, etc.  I know that she'll also work on tweaking it for you if you have any problems, but I'm not sure what the costs are for any of it.  You can check out her website at [linkhttp://www.monicasegal.com]www.monicasegal.com[/link] and see and/or order some of her booklets.
