Half firm, half soft poo

    Half firm, half soft poo

I read something about this from another poster in the General Q&A area and it made me realize Presley is the same way. It seems that in order for her to have a solid poo, it needs to wait all night until she goes in the AM. She eats (Innova Puppy) around 5pm, most nights she has a BM (soft, not diherria but just a little soft) after dinner and/or before bed between 9-10pm. She goes for a 20-30 minute walk about 6:30am and when she poo's in the AM the 1st link of two is hard and dark in color but the last 1/4 of it is softer and a lighter color.

I switched her to Innova from Sciance Diet because I had read it was more natrual and could help reduce the amount of times she has a BM. She had a hard time being house trained and was going 3 and sometimes 4 times a day - in the morning, around lunch, and after dinner or before bed (some day's both after dinner and before bed). She is fine with th ehouse training now though. We feed her the recommended amount on the Innova bag (1 and 2/3 cups a day) for a 23lb ;pup.

She is 10 months old and perfectly healthy so frankly I'm not sure if it's something to get too concered about...

I can't really remeber but I think she had more solid, darker poo when she was on teh SD - should I go back to SD? try somethign else? not worry about it?

    Hi Presley--
It sounds like you are feeding too much.  Depending on a dog's activity level, a dog should consume between 2 and 3 percent of it's body weight per day.  Since Presley is 23 pounds, that would be between 460-690 kcals a day.
Innova is 557 kcals per cup.  If you are feeding 1-2/3 cups a day, that would be around 985 kcals a day----too much.
You would be better off feeding between 1 and 1-1/4 cups a day (557kcals-668kcals) depending on how active Presley is.  This should take care of her stool issues.  Good Luck.
I would not go back to feeding SD as it has too many fillers and preservatives, not to mention artificial stool hardeners which is one of the reasons you had firm stools with it.

Thanks for the reply tzu_mom - thats a good thought/idea. My only porblem is she is very active some days, and some days not so much. She goes to day-care at least 2 days week and on the non-day-care days she gets walked a minimum of 3 miles (3 walks, morning, noon, and night) not mention the weekend activites like playing with my firends golden, then 2 hour hike yesterday, etc.

Does anyone have any info or links to how many calories a pup burns when playing with other dogs, walking, etc?
