"Food Allergy", German Shepherd Dog

In my post above I said grains which have gluten like corn and wheat are more likely to cause allergic reactions than rice, which is gluten free. A booklet I have from Monica Segal says rice is a gluten free carb, but some dog food companies such as Nutro list rice gluten as an ingredient, so I'm not sure if rice is gluten free or not.

This link>>Is Rice Really Gluten Free?<< may help to explain it.

Actually, the Pet Supplies "Plus" stores here do not carry Natural Balance, Sensible Choice, CA Natural (or any Natura product), or Solid Gold products.  It'd be nice if they did, but as of today, they don't.  Also, the CA Natural fish formula is Herring and Sweet Potato, not trout.

ETA: How could I forget to mention how pretty Shane is?!?  He's a beauty!

Thank you, Roxie865 for your kind words. [:)] Roxie, too, is a little beauty! She has such loving character in her face!

My area of NJ is impossible for finding specialty or premium dog foods! I have only one dog. So it isn't cost or time effective for me to hop in my car and drive for hours to buy 40  lb. bags of food. I don't have the room to store more food than that - I'd also prefer my dog's food be as fresh as possible. Buying over the Internet is really expensive, too, because of the shipping charges! If only I could find out what Shane's allergic to I'd cook his food myself!

In the interim, he likes the Natural Recipe Venison & Brown Rice and I'm able to buy it locally. So.....fingers crossed! I've eliminated everything else from his diet. Even his treats are Venison & Brown Rice. We shall see!

Only one dog here too.  I've only ordered from them once so far but with [linkhttp://www.petfooddirect.com]www.petfooddirect.com[/link] they e-mail you 15-20% discount codes after your first order.  That should take care of enough of the shipping charges that the price should be comparable to ;purchasing locally (after sales tax) if you are not in a state where they also charge sales tax.

Once you have items in your shopping cart their website tells you how much shipping weight you can add before higher shipping charges apply.  That makes it easy to add a trial size bag or not too heavy non-food item.

Wow! Thanks, Doode! Just yesterday I ordered a heap of Nature's Recipe Training Treats from PetFoodDirect! I didn't know about the discount codes you get after your first order (must be food, right? Not treats?)

Anyway, at least I know for the future!

I believe any order qualifies you but you must tell them you want to be e-mailed special offers.  I declined this during my order but later sent an e-mail requesting to be on the list.  Soon after I received a 15% off discount code but do not need anything at the moment.  Others tell me they hold out for 20% off codes before reordering.

Oooh! Quite valuable information, Doode! Thank you so much! I'll get on it and email them immediately. I believe that I had passed up the e-mails about special offers!

    Thank you! [:D

Yes, she's quite the love hound!  Always ready for a belly rub, but enjoys spreading her own love in the form of kisses even more! [:)]

    Oddly enough...

What appears to be an allergy can sometimes be a physiological reaction to an insufficient diet. Some people believe this is caused by commercial pet food.

If you get the chance check out www.vibrantpets.net ...their testimonials page lists a number of similar situations that were rectified by a probiotic supplement.

Our shepherd mix had allergies when she was eating Nutro chicken-based food. Same thing - itching alot, small red bumps, etc.

We switched her to California Natural Lamb & Rice and it cleared up completely. Lamb is supposed to be a good meat to try to allergy dogs. Cali Nat is good too because there are very few ingredients, so less things to potentially trigger the allergies.
