    Glucosamine.. and calcium/phosphorus

Me again, trying to sort things out here...

    1. Is glucosamine safe to give to a dog for it's entire lifetime? I was thinking of giving Scout one a day (she's under a year now) to help strengthen and maintain her joints. Does this makes sense?

    2. Can someone please [:)] explain the Calcium/Phos issue? I take it that when you add meat to a primarily kibble diet, you raise the phos levels, and need to balance them out with a calcium supplement? What about vegetables - to they throw off the balance?

My vet has given his English Setter the Glucosamine since she was a puppy.  He uses it as a 'preventative measure' or to try to slow down or delay arthritis.  His dog is now retired from the show ring as a champion. She turned 7 last month.  He also takes it himself and has for years for the same reason (he just turned 44)

And I can't answer your other question.

Glucosamine is safe for Scout and may be beneficial. I've given it to mine since they were six months old. It definately helped to reduce the effects of Wolfgang's hereditary dysplasia.

Calcium/Phosporus need to be within a certain ratio. 1.65 to 1 is optimum but there's a certain amount of variance allowed. Also some dogs utilize calcium better than others. Most kibble has a little more calcium than necessary so adding 1/2 cup of cooked or raw per cup of kibble is generally safe.

Scout will appreciate raw knuckle bones which will up the calcium. You will appreciate not having dental cleanings as often--if ever!

usually only people who primarily home-cook and feed a lot of boneless meat need to worry about ca:p ratios. If you're just supplementing kibble, you're almost certainly ok.

We started Cassie on Glucosamine when she was about 2, she tore her cruciate ligament when she was about 5 (the conformation of show Newf's seems to make them prone to this).  She has not developed secondary arthritis due to taking the Glucosamine and other herbs...she is now 11.

Even my Sister takes Glucosamine, she is a very busy dog groomer specializing in large breeds...this can take a toll on your health as it is very physical work.  She has been grooming steady 6 days a week appox 10 dogs a day for about 21 years and is still in good physical shape.  Groomers can get serious back/joint and health problems especially when you work this hard.  So, for her the Glucosamine has helped her.  [:D]
