    Trying Something New

I decided to make dishes of old fashioned rice pudding, one for me, one for son & family and then I decided to make one for the dogs.  I left out the salt, sugar and raisins out of the dogs,so only has rice, milk, eggs, and vanilla.  I didn't think about it til too late, but i but i could have added either cooked apple pieces or raw grated apple before putting it in the oven.  I do make them frosty paws, but I think they will enjoy this and even tho it has rice (which i don't mind them having) I would think the milk and eggs would be good for them, or least not hurt them as they have all had each of these ingredeints many times.  Will only get a little each time.   Is baking as I type.

Sounds yummy Sandra....how 'bout emailing me the recipe for the HUMAN version?

At the risk of being accused of attention seeking or compensating for the crap food I feed, I've got a couple pots of homecooked on the stove in the downstairs kitchen and I can't KEEP my crew out in the yard......they hear that food processor start and they want nothing to do with playing in the yard!

Yum! I bet they would like some cinnamon in there, too. My dogs LOVE cinnamon. I make some pumpkin cookies, with cinnamon and nutmeg. I should probably post the recipe, since it's that time of year... The dogs LOVE the spices, and the cookies smell SO GOOD baking!

I did sprinkle very lightely with nutmeg, forgot about it, just thinking of main ingredeints.  I was not sure about nutmeg for dogs so just a very light sprinkle.  Glenda, i will go get my cook book and copy down the recipe here.

    Old Fashioned Rice Pudding

    1 3/4 cup water
1/2 cup Uncle Ben's Converted Brand Rice ( I actually use Mahata's Jasmine rice)
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    2 cups of milk
    2 eggs, beaten
    1/3 cup sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup of raisins, steamed in water & drained (I dont' do do this, just toss them in
               right out of the container
Nutmeg or cinnamon (optional)  ( I like nutmeg

Heat oven to 350.  Bring water to boil, stir in rice and salt.  Cover and simmer until all water is absorbed, about 30 minutes.  Add milk and boil gently, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens slightly, about 5 minutes.  Combine eggs, sugar and vanilla in bowl.  Grandually stir in rice mixture.  Mix well  Add raisins.  Pour into a greased 1 1/2 quart casserole.  (I use pam spray instead of greasing the dish).Sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon. Place casserole in a pan containing about 1 inche of hot water.  Bake uncoverd, in 350 oven for 45-50 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean.  Serve warm or chilled. (my son and the grandkids like to eat some of this with their breakfast  I also send over bread pudding, which they like to eat with breakfast.  DIL doesn't like either and never fixes them, so when i make either, I make double batch to share with son & grandkids.

For the dogs, I didn't add the salt  to it, nor the raisins.  Next time I am going added either the cooked apple or grated raw apple before baking.  They will only get a spoon full each day, possibily on their dry kibble for breakfast.

EDITED  Forgot to say i omit the sugar as well as salt and raisins.

Heck, I don't work, I have the time, I love to cook, and the boys are married and hubby on the road so much.  Who else do I have to cook for?  I use to love  to cook for family & the boys friends when they were in school.  Rare was the night we sat down without at least one, usually 3-4 "spare kids" at the table.

Put a large spoonful of the rice pudding in with their dry kibble this morning and they all scarfed it down, then ran around checking the others' bowls to see if they had left any.
