Choking on food

A larger kibble might NOT help.  I have a couple boys who just literally inhale their kibble, and some who chew slowly and methodically.  Generally inhaling doesn't cause any problems, however, your little guy clearly is having a problem. I had the opposite problem with my crew....when we tried TWO with the tiny kibbles they couldn't figure out HOW to chew them!

Part of this might still go pack to the litter mentality...where they ALL eat fast to make sure they don't loose anything to a littermate.  It's amazing to me to watch my foster pups literally inhale from a common bowl, but when I put them in separate crates to eat, they are slow and methodical eaters.  But, sometimes it does take a little time for them to get over that.

I think that spreading the kibble out on a cookie sheet, a little at a time, is an excellent idea, as is the tricky treat ball sort of "toy".  I think with this boy, I would spread out his meal times....just a small portion of what he needs at a time and make him wait a few minutes between refilling the tray.  By this age, yes, if he is ignoring the third meal, then by all means eliminate it and don't add it back in.  That's my acid test for the third meal....lack of interest.

Glenmar, so far thats what we've been doing and it has been an improvement, but again not 100%.  I am going to stick with the two meals a day though . . . .

BTW, where in NW Michigan are you from?  Traverese City?  Boyne maybe?  I live outside of Detroit, but have family in Sutton's Bay and Charlevoix . . . . great area to be.

We are in Kalkaska.  Mom and Sis are in TC.  We were in Petoskey the first year and a half after we moved back to MI, then DH changed jobs and is working in TC now so this is far less of a commute.  PLUS we were lucky enough to get a lease option on a great house from a former ACO, shelter supervisor so he could care less how many critters we have!  And, we have a LOT!

It's not as pretty HERE as it is in Charlevoix or TC or Suttons Bay...but, there are some advantages to being a bit away from the Lake!  And, with six german shepherds, I'm partial to being out in the boonies....and the boonies are MUCH easier to find here!

I grew up in Midland and being married to broadcasting (twice) have moved all over the country, but MI is still my favorite state....well, maybe except for winter!

    It's Glenda, by the way.

Well, an update to this situation is somewhat positive . . .

Winston's been eating Innova puppy, and Canidae (in the process of a complete switch to Innova) from a cookie sheet, and the frequency of him choking has really decreased.  He had one incident yesterday morning which casued him to throw up a bit, and he had one or two more minor incidents after that.  Then at dinner, he only had one or two minor incidents, and this morning he ate breakfast without any choking.  I guess this is a step in the right direction . . . . I'll continue with the cookie sheet for a while to see how it goes.  I also have been letting him eat the last little bit out of his bowl so he doesn't "forget" about his food bowl.  Once I'm confident that this choking business is over, I'll slowly re-introduce his bowl.

He gets fed once every two days . . . so I don't think thats the cause.

Just kidding! I can just HEAR the gasps through the computer!

That is a good one.  I did gasp, I have to admit.  :)
