new warning on artifical sweetener and dogs

This is in most sugar less gums today.  I was surprised and wanted to pass on the warning.  My dog more than once has taken a pack of gum off our counter and I had no idea this was dangerous!

Actually, the news on xylitol has been out for a while. Emma nearly died from a xylitol encounter, a year or so ago. It's good to spread it, though, because a lot of people haven't heard about it....

I put up a flyer, at the health food store, about it. We sell xylitol, by the pound.

This was on AOL welcome screen today also!
I thought ALL artificial sweeterers were dangerous to dogs,,,didn't know it was just this one.
Does anyone know what its in besides sugarless gum?

Really and truly, ALL artificial sweeteners are dangerous to everyone. Xylitol is not artificial. It comes from some sort of tree. It's GOOD for people. It discourages plaque and is used in quite a few natural dental gums and toothpastes.

Jenny,,,are you saying that xylitol should not be dangerous to our dogs?

    Dyan, here you go:

A Xylitol is found in a variety of products. It can be purchased in bulk form and is found in energy bars, sugar-free desserts, jams, and syrups. There are various gums and mints containing xylitol that can be purchased in retail stores, through specialized manufacturers, and online. A number of toothpaste brands, oral rinses, vitamins, and nasal sprays now contain xylitol in varying amounts. Xylitol-containing teeth wipes used to protect infants' teeth are currently available.

Jenny,,,are you saying that xylitol should not be dangerous to our dogs?

Absolutely not. It is VERY dangerous to our dogs. Emma ate one tiny (smaller than a green pea) mint that contained xylitol, and almost died. It's just not dangerous to US. It's like onions, chocolate, grapes, and macadamia nuts. It's a food that is healthy for us (chocolate has amazing antioxidant qualities), but can kill our dogs.

looks better the way you posted it

    Okay Jenny,,,GOT IT!
When you said ALL artificial sweeteners are dangerous to everyone and then xylito is not an artificial sweetener,,,I thought you were saying that its not dangerous because it is not one of the artificial sweeteners.
    Thanks for that clarification!!!
