How long is it safe to keep liver?

I have had some liver in the freezer for about 2-3 weeks.  I took it out of the freezer and put it in my refrigerator 5 or 6 days ago.  Is that too long?  Should I throw it out, or is it ok to cook and give to Rose?

Just my experience, but you will know either by the smell or the color, or both.  If it's grayish looking or smells bad, toss it.  It's just not worth taking the chance and 5-6 days might just be a bit too long.

I think liver smells bad anyway, so thats not a good test.  I can't even stand the smell of honey!  Its still red, but not quite as bright as it was.  I think I'll just throw it out.  I don't want to risk it, and its really gross anyway.  I don't really like making treats with it at all because its so gross.  But Rose and Colton love it.

Many years ago, I used to make liver & onions and thought it was yummy.  I still might like it today if I'd not had an experience where it went bad.  Trust me when I say, it really smells bad [:@]

It should be well and truly ripe after 5 days [:'(] 2-3 days in the fridge for any meat product is my cut off point,if i havnt used it or bagged it up and frozen it by then it goes in the bin.Sometimes i buy a whole heap of meat and keep putting the bagging process off, sayine i'll do it tomorrow, until the meat goes off and i have to toss it[&:] This is one of my least favourite jobs to do with the dogs [:-]

No wonder my dog food smelled so bad, this week....

    Oops.
They're fine, though. No adverse reactions. The meat, liver, and heart sat there for 5 days, before I did anything to it.

It's in a sealed package, never been opened, so there really isn't any smell from the outside.  I don't plan on opening it to find out.  That stuff is so gross!

You know what i find annoying! Is that meat goes off so quickly in the first place... Surely "Fresh" meat would last longer than a few days, right?

As for giving the dogs ripe meat, they probably wouldnt get sick from eating it,but i just feel really bad serving them up off food.I'm poor, but not that poor [8D]

ETA: Hopefully Lauric will see this and let us know how long fresh meat keeps in the fridge before starting to go bad.I think she kills some of her meat, cant get much fresher than that [:D]

Liver is often frozen before it's sold.....just like the "fresh chicken" that's so hard it'd take an ice pick to pry it apart.....the old deep chilled for shipping BS.......

But, since it's usually pretty well rock hard when you buy it that's a good indicator that you'll get a little more time out of it before it's bad....and  yes, you truely will KNOW if it's bad.  You'd have to open the package to USE it anyhow.......

Chicken livers aren't as smelly as beef.  They also have the added benefit that you don't have to DO anything to them before dumping them in the old food processor

Mine doesn't smell THAT bad.... Beef livers and hearts STINK in the first place. The kale I cooked, and the greens, stunk too. It smelled a  little worse than usual, while it was cooking. Enough that I noticed, not enough that I became violently opposed and tossed it. I'm guessing they were only a little bad. I could go buy them more meat, but they don't care. Their poops look good, and they feel fine. The food isn't stinking up the fridge. I prefer my fruit a little over-ripe. Maybe they like their meat over-ripe, too[:D]

If you can find it thawed, which you sometimes can, I would portion and freeze, taking out what you need as you need it. Though, I fish and use livers to fish with and the worse they smell the more fish love them.........so there is always something you can do with the "rotten" ones...[:D]
