    Are Mushrooms poisonous?

I know some mushrooms can be poisonous to even people. But today while I was outside playing with my dog I found some wild mushrooms growing. This is in an area where Kota is normally tied out for some fresh air and to potty. I pulled all the mushrooms up that I could find. My question is are mushrooms poisonous to dogs and if so what species of mushrooms?

Certain species of mushrooms are considered to be relatively non-toxic, while other species can be very toxic. Of the toxic species, some can potentially cause liver or kidney damage, while others may produce severe gastrointestinal or even neurological effects. Toxic mushrooms can often be found growing right alongside non-toxic ones.  Because of this, identifying each type of mushroom existing on your property can be very difficult. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises keeping all wild mushrooms out of the reach of pets, and recommends that all wild mushroom ingestions should be treated very seriously. If accidental exposures to wild mushrooms occur, seek immediate veterinary assistance by contacting your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

You did the right thing, I wouldn't trust wild mushrooms, even people who think they know their mushrooms can be confused.

There are some great mushrooms that you can buy tho.  I give mushrooms to my dogs as a part of a preventative diet...I also eat them myself.  Not the white button mushrooms, my favorites are Sh it take mushrooms which contain vitamins B1, B2, B12, C and D plus niacin and pantothenic acid and a high concentration of nutrients.

When available I like to feed Reishi mushrooms which are great for dogs with arthritis and allergies.  These mushrooms are great for the immune system and I try to include them in some of my raw fed meals[:)]

I was wondering if Reishi and Shitake were safe, for the dogs. I've been not allowing them to have mine.... I was looking at an immune supplement, last week with Reishi, and thinking of reading up. I'll have to see what I find out about which species are ok.

Wow, you better watch out for thoe horrable sh***ake mushroom![:D] That is too funny!

    It's shiitake [;)]

Most people who get poiesened by mushrooms get poisened by "Amanitas" which are the most toxic species. The base of the stem curves out. Stops your liver from functioning and you die in a few days.

Here is less toxic version of a differnt amamita that doesn't contain liver toxins but will still make you sick.

It was the irish (or some nothern europien clan) that would eat the less toxic aminitas before battle because it made them not fear death. It's also thought to be the shroom in the Mario Brothers games that makes mario stronger[;)]

There are other toxic mushrooms but they are not as common as the very toxic amanita. One of the best ways to identify what shrooms are what is to take a spore print. Either way, it's safer not to eat what you don't know.

A good book to pick up on the benefits of mushrooms in a dogs diet is "Healing Pets with Nature's Miracle Cures" by Dr Henry Pasternak DVM, CVA.  He has a lot of information on the cancer fighting abilites of these mushrooms.  I try to add them in a few home prepared meals a week.. The Shiitake in my area is a lot more economical.

Ah!  So that's what the red and white mushroom looks like ... for real.  There are a variety of colors, besides the red.  They have green, orange, blue, and more.  Eeek ... I hijacked the thread with video game babble.

On topic -- I see some gross yellow mushrooms in the yard, but I remove them before letting Roxie play.  It just made sense before I read about this.  She's eager to sample stuff, so they had to be removed.  Anyone know which ones I mean?  They're yellow and very squishy.  They don't crunch like the other mushrooms; they become gooey.  And I know they're mushrooms ...

Ewwwwww!!!!!! At home, I rarely go on the other side of the couch between it and the fireplace rock, but I did tonight and there was some sort of freaky mushroom growing up between the carpet and the rock [:'(] [:'(]

What a mushroom is, is a fruit of a fungus. The fungus lives underground and when ready to reporduce it will fruit certain times of the year to spread spors. Picking a shroom only removes the fruit and not the fungus which means it's likely for the fungus to produce more fruit (mushrooms).

I don't know exactly how to get rid of the fungus but my best guess is you could try a fungicide or something similar that you can find in a garden section. I'de also check to see how safe that is to have around your dog. I've only grown them in bio lab, I've never had to get rid of them.

Mushrooms are all of a sudden, popping up everywhere in my yard.  I pulled a huge one, like a portobello that you cook on the grill,,,and littles ones with little heads.  Can't trust my puppy.
