How should I feed my puppy?

How should I feed my puppy?

I have a 15 wk mini schnauzer puppy. She has been with us for about three weeks. In that time she has gone from 6 to 10 lbs. We recently switched her from the food the "litter owner" had her on, Purina Puppy to Nutro Max Puppy. I have just been putting out about a cup a day and she seemed to be doing fine. Yesterday she started eating more and more. Today she had about two cups and still seems hungry. She doesn't have worms because she has been checked and wormed. Anyhow, my question is this. Should I be concerned? Also, should i be leaving the food out for her to eat as she wants or should I only give it to her on a sched.? Any and all help is appreciated!!

I would feed her small scheduled meals 3 times a day until she is around 6 months (give or take). Just feed the suggested amount split up into 3 meals. If she looks like she is losing weight, add a little bit more. If she looks like she is gaining wait, feed a little bit less. Either way, it is great your girl has a good appetite! Picky eaters can be the pits! [:(]

Thank you, one more question though. Should I be concerned that she is eating so much? I can't bare to think that she is hungry and I am not feeding her enough.

Thats one of the perils of feeding a food like nutro max,it contains alot of fillers and stuff so the dog has to eat alot to gain the correct amount of nutrition needed.

Sometimes they hit a growth spurt, rather unpredicatably, and they are RAVENOUS.  I agree with feeding measured amounts 3X a day instead of just putting food down and leaving it......helps with housetraining too if you control when they eat....but don't hesitate to feed a little bit more.  Just keep a close eye on her weight.

I do agree that Nutro is not a great food, however, it is a HUGE step up from the Purina line.  Often feed stores, think hay and oats, will carry the better foods, and most brands have a web site with a store locator.  The Eagle Pak holistic foods are good, Solid Gold, Canidae....I personally feed Innova and have for over two years.
