Hollistic Dog food for the senior dog

All right, my friend Haley (i know, I know...)has a dobie and a aussie/ bc mix. They're currently Kirkland brand (Costco Generic) and Haley's looking for an affordable holistic dog food. The Dobe, Dominick, is 3 and the aussie mix Stormy is 11. She has some allergies to grass and has a yeast infection in her ears. I want to help Haley out and find some foods that arebetter than generic brand dog kibble. They won't do raw because of the old 'bacteria will be killing me and my dog', but Eagle Pack and Solid Gold are too expensive.

How about California Naturals Herring and Sweet Potato? I'm thinking based on the cost here..which is $37.99 for a 36 lb bag. They also have a frequent buyer program so she can earn a free bag.

    Other possibilities...
    Canine Caviar
    Natural Balance

both have frequent buyer programs and and a bit lower in price than others.

Also..the dog who struggles with allergies to grass...giving her some help with immune system function could help. Animal Apawthecaries has several tinctures. Immune-OL. Constitutional Blend, Detox Blend and Spring Tonic are a few to research.

    Just some ideas.

Hi Mallory!  First of all, ear infections are often a sign of a wheat allergy.  So please tell your friend to stop feeding anything with wheat - even treats with wheat can flare up an ear infection again.  Also does it necessarily have to be a senior diet?  Most senior foods are just lower in calorie (and meat).  Some will have stuff for the joints and maybe easier to digest, but if she has 2 dogs of different ages it would be so much easier to feed an all life stages formula.

Diamond makes a lamb and rice and chicken and rice diet that is corn and wheat free (2 of the most common allergies in dogs).  They run under $30.00 a bag anywhere - cheaper than Iams and actually better.  Diamond can be found in some Petco's and many, many country feed stores.

Pro Pac is another inexpensive good dog food.  They make a wheat free lamb formula that is under $30 a bag.  This can be found in some Pet Supplies "Plus's" and alot of country feed stores.

Sensible Choice makes a Lamb and Rice and Chicken Rice diet, but it usually around $32 a bag.  This can be found in Petco and Pet Supplies "Plus."

Canidae is often under $30 a bag depending on where you go.  Also wheat and corn free and, in my opinion, the best of the above.
