    Chew Toys

Just curious what other types of chews I can give my dog. He loves to chew when he is inside, but I know he gets bored with the same old things. We don't have a lot of money so it has to be something that will last like Nylabone Galileo. BTW...are they any good? Trying to convince my husband to try them.

So far he has a kong we stuff once in a while with food, or pb. He has a puzzle ball we stuff with food and make him "chase" his dinner or breakfast. Plus a cow bone, and hoof (hoof doesn't last long though) Last but not least raw hide bones. He likes the rawhide the best because he can chew and chew and at the same time get some kind of "food" So I want it to be edible. We did give him a Nylabone for Large dogs. That lasted only about 6 hours. Like I said, he loves to chew.

Oh, and most of his chewing is inside, so stuff that is ok for a carpet would be wonderful, though I don't usually let him keep toys on the carpet, sometimes they just end up there.

Wow.  He is a chewer.  Have you tried the Nylabone for "heavy chewers".  I think they make two kinds.  There are the yellowy, translucent ones and then the solid white ones.  The solid white ones hold up a lot better.  My pup would mow through the normal ones, but the white ones last several weeks.

The Galileo will last - ours is a terrific chewer as well but doens't like nylabones - the Galileo might be just what you need!
I caqan't find anything that stands up to our chewer but as I said he doesn't like the nylabones

Let me suggest you go to your grocery store or butcher and buy some soup, marrow, knuckle, or rib bones. Raw beef bones. Dogs LOVE these. Freeze them beforehand to prolong the chewing experience. Do not cook or heat in any way. Your dog will happily chew away. And they are much CHEAPER and HEALTHIER than letting the dog chew on plastic. A nylabone is what, $4 or so? you can get four or five raw bones for that.

I have heard that there is a possiblity of a dog breaking their teeth on marrow bones.  Has anyone else heard that?

Theres possibility that a dog may chip a tooth chewing on Rawhides, Kibble, on basically anything, the risk is no greater with raw bones.

The raw bones will provide good nutrients, a distraction, and will provide a special treat. The bone will help clean up his teeth and make him a healthier chewer.

Couldnt agree  more! You can train your dog to eat his bones only on a towel or blanket,so they wont mess up your carpets. They are much cheaper than nylabones, which are only, what,a hunk of plastic [:'(] I bet your dog would appreciate a raw meaty bone much more [;)] Plus there are many health benefits associated with rmb's(raw meaty bones).I cant think of any for those rubber thingies [8|]

I know this is a silly question, for dogs eat raw meat all the time in the wild, then again, most of the time, the kill is fresh. Will feeding them the bones hurt if there is any raw meat on them?

There is a store up the street that gives you dog bones, but my parents always use to cook them for our last dog. I do like the idea, it is cheaper, as long as he doesn't try to bury them under the couch, or behind the table or something silly like that.

It's great if it has raw meat on it! Do not cook them at all though..just give them to him raw and frozen.

I have three herding type dogs and all have learned to keep their bones on a mat. I bought camp mats at Walmart for $5, they are the type that you put under your sleeping bag. They are 6' long so I cut it in half which gave me two. I always place the mats in the same place in the family room. Each dog eats in the same spot every time. If they start to get up off the mat with the bone I simply say "bummer" and I take the bone. I put it in the freezer and go back and sit down for a bit ignoring them.
Then I offer it again on the mat. I have only had to do that a couple times. They know they will lose it if they leave the mat with the bone. The mats clean up easily and can be rolled up for storage.

Also..I just bought each of my dogs a Planet Dog ball..each one got a different ball. One is a glow ball, one is a diamond plate ball and one looks like an eight ball. They smell like peppermint and have a neat texture to them. I was thinking they wouldn't last long..I was pretty sure my dog Witt would shred it, but that wasn't the case at all. Two of the three dogs walk around the house with the ball in their mouth repeatedly chomping on it. They seem to really like working the ball in their mouth. The third dog thought it was cool for a little while..then went back to his tennis ball. He is my flyball dog and always goes back to his tennis ball.
Nobody has chewed them up. The glow ball gets played with the most. When you buy the glow ball the money goes to service dogs..which I thought was cool! The company also has a ball that donates money to breast cancer and one to prostate cancer. The balls all have holes in them..so you could stuff them...I don't, but you could .

My senior dog broke her tooth on a nylabone. There is always the risk of tooth breakage, and choking. It doesn't matter what you're feeding. My friend's JRT caught a tennis ball just right and broke one of her canines right in half. Stuff happens.
