Pork bones?

    Pork bones?

Hi all! I went to the store today, to pick up some of Penny's favorite bones, beef necks. Well, the beef necks they had there looked gross, so I didn't get any. Instead I got some pork brisket bones they had on sale. Are these any good? They seem to be pretty meaty and it looks like they have some cartlige on them. Are pork bones soft and easy to consume? Penny can't eat the beef neck bones, they're more of a recreational bone for her. Are pork brisket bones similar to beef neck bones? Also, I heard that you should freeze pork for a few days before serving to kill any parasites? Is that true? I've never fed raw pork before, so this is new to me!

    Thanks for any help,
    -Sarah

I'm not sure what brisket bones are, but my store sells pork neck bones. They are meaty, not too fatty and, yes the bones are soft. My Maltese completely consumes them.

I buy a package, seperate them on a cookie sheet, so they don't stick to each other then freeze, and bag.

Okay, thanks Randall. Does anyone know about the parasite thing? Or can I go ahead and give her a bone this evening for dinner?

Glad it wasn't just me who didn't know what a brisket bone is [:)].  I did feed the pork shoulder bones to my lab though and she loved them and was easily able to consume the entire thing.  I was told that the parasite issue with pork is no longer a problem because pork is much safer than it was many years ago.  I've also heard that the "freezing it for x amount of days" actually requires a freeze of lower temp than most home freezers are set to.  The ones I got were frozen from the store, so I just thawed them out when I needed them.

    Okay thanks.

I've never heard of or seen a brisket bone before, either. It's kind of hard to explain, really. It's pretty much two bones covered with lots of cartlige and meat. It's kind of fatty, too. So I won't be feeding it on a regular basis. The bones seem soft. I could cut through some with my knife. Alot of it is cartlige, though. But it's really hard to portion it out. Because there's lots of meat, but only like 2 large bones. And my dog is small. But maybe I'll just let her knaw say half the bone off, then save the other half for a different meal.
