Doug the Dog on a Diet

did he actually seem sick after eating all that food? I had a dog eat 10 pounds, yes, 10 pounds, of the puppy food a friend sent along with her puppy for some dog-sitting. She seemed perfectly fine, quite pleased with herself. Slept alot for the next week or so. Didn't even get diarrhea.

Sick doesn't even descibe it. On death's door maybe would be closer. The day after it happened I had to travel to my mom's. I brought him to my mom's to keep an eye on him because he was refusing water and slightly dehydrated. By the time we had arrived at 11:00 am he was crying when he took a step. I called my old vet who was just a few minutes away, and when we got there, he was unable to walk. He had had diarrhea since a few hours after he ate all that food.

When Doug got here last night he was not quite his old bouncy self but the vet had cleared him to eat a little. He nibbled a little this morning but more importantly he has been drinking normally. Probably he was in fact right on the edge of pancreatitis so we are going to baby his tummy for a while. His ALT had dropped to just below "low normal" when he first came in.

I've had to use lactulose before - actually, I had an older dog who was on it for life and I don't know whether he got used to it, or the all raw diet he was on (the liver problems predated the raw diet), but he had nice typical raw fed poops.

;Poor Doug; I'm sure Jessie would have done the same thing; she also thinks she is " The Owner of All Food." I'm glad to hear he's out of the woods and is home again with you; give him some ear scratches for me.
