    new dog owner..question on food

My husband and I just got Sophie from North Shore animal league a week and a half ago.  We are weaning her off the food they used because after reading on here, it doesn't sound like it's the best choice out there. She is 7 1/2 months and a shep/lab mix although we all think she is a shep/collie mix.  She is 33 lbs and the vet said she shouldn't get much bigger.  I have been looking online and really like the ingredients in Castor and Pollux dog food as well as Natural Balance.  I read about Nutro after seeing a lot of posts about it but it looked like it had a lot of grains which I read we should avoid overloading on.  Suggestions?

Sorry, can't help you on the food issue (lots of others can though [:)]) but I just had to say...

    WOW, your dog is beautiful!!

I don't know about the other foods, but I know Natural Balance is good.

And I definitely think your dog is a Shep/collie mix.

Your new girl is gorgeous!  I can definately see the collie in her :D

I wouldn't recommend Nutro, because although it's not the worst, it is far from the best.
I would stay away from any foods which use corn, white rice, by-products, etc.
Natural Balance is a good, holistic food.  It is carried at Petco, so it is convenient compared to most holistic foods.
I really like Timberwolf Organics, and I will swear by it.  Since putting Madison on it, it has made his fur very very soft, he has had more energy, and looks like a much healthier dog.  Some of the formulas contain no grains, and you can also mix in some raw if you'd like.

Other good brands are Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness, Canidae... the hard part is actually choosing from all of the foods which are available!

Thank you for your comments and suggestions!  Sorry the picture is so big!  I'm still trying to figure out how this all works.

What T.O. forumal do you use?

    I also recommend Nature's Variety.

I would also suggest a no grain food.

She is a beautiful girl and I am happy she has found a loving home.  All dogs deserve a loving home.  I will not suggest any foods as i do not feed what most here feed thier dogs--except for the home cooking I add to it.

I switch between the Timberwolf formulas.  Right now we are using the Black Forest Venison and Lamb, and I am trying to switch over one of my dog's who has food allergies onto it.

We've used a number of different foods over the past year, trying to find the one that works best with our dogs.  We've seen the best results on Timberwolf.

Now I'm thinking about switching them to a prepackaged raw diet, or mixing.
