He doesn't like his bully stick!

See, me, I don't encourage my dogs to eat shoes.

How are they supposed to know the difference in new shoes and new shoes? I'd hate to bring home an $80 pair of shoes and have the dog destroy them. That's just me, though. Attached to my shoes, and all.

I had a problem with JJ taking and playing with our shoes when we first brought him home. I was able to correct the problem and now he understands that they are NOT toys. He has a toybox of toys and I rotate some of them for variety. I don't think he would understand the difference between shoes that I am now allowing him to play with and shoes that are off limits.

Thanks for the suggestion Siana. . .I am really looking more for a good treat that is edible and will help with keeping his teeth clean though. [:D]

Looks like the bully stick might actually be of interest to him now and he kinda likes the Merrick texas toothpicks.

Also, my little girl Prudence comes home to live with us this weekend so I think that she will add an extra bit of "interest " in his treats because he won't want her to have it!

raw cow hooves w/green tripe...uhm...stinky smell...uhm..Romeo says: what cow hooves w/tripe? is it my b-day... [sm=dance.gif]

I also had trouble finding something he liked to chew on at first... I started him on ox tails... and the divine hooves and he goes absolutley nuts, he turns into a pretzel w/excitement.  I like the raw cow hooves as they are softer than the processed ones you find at a pet store.

    I get mine from [linkhttp://www.greentripe.com]www.greentripe.com[/link]

Ok so Jimmy James actually has learned to like his bully stick because our new greyhound Prudence likes hers so there is now competition for bully's!!

here are some pics of the bully enjoyment!

I took my dog to Pet Supplies "Plus"  couple day ago and Joey pulled a bully stick off the shelf, which he has never done before, so I bought it.  He chewed on it for while and then cried and pushed it accross the floor.  I think he hurt himself, although I couldn't find anything wrong and now, of course, he won't touch it.

Zukes dental bones are potato based.  You might want to try thoughs.  Also Booda Corn Starch Chews are, well, corn starch.  Joey loves them, but your dog may not because they are very hard.  Pig hearts are very yummy too, but too much and diareah.

Another suggestion: CET dental chews.  You can get them at your vets office.  They look just like rawhide but they are mostly vegitable starch.

See, I am confused about the CET chews. I know they look like rawhide, but I had heard that they weren't, then soemone on this forum said they WERE rawhide.

    SO they are NOT???

    • Gold Top Dog
All the boxes I've seen have SAID rawhide, on them.

I may be looking at a different product than Jojo, though....

Actually, I think jennie_c_d introduced me to them.  I thought they were rawhide when I first looked at them and the one I looked at on the web was rawhide, but then I was in my vets office a week ago and took a look at the packaging.  It was vegitable starch and poultry digest.  No raw hide, but I can't find the same thing on the web.

I hate to rain on your bully stick parade, but I don't think they do much for cleaning teeth. My dog has eaten them pretty much every day for a year and he had some definite yucky tartar buildup by his first birthday. It's only when I started giving him raw chicken wings that they improved. I think the only chew that really cleans teeth is a raw bone.

I fed my dog bully sticks until we discovered they were bull penis! Does the dog care? No. I just find it a bit disturbing to have cow penis's lying around my apartment. Cow esogus is OK though..[;)]. Plus one batch we ordered smelled so bad!

incase you wanted to check it out...it might not bother you. Just didn't settle with me. Bon apetite!

LOL Sheltiegirl!  [:D]   I was surprised by their content some time ago when I found out what they REALLY WERE!

I have no problem with their content. .  .it is not as though they wouldn't eat that part of an animal in the wild. I agree that they don't have the best smell, especially once they start chewing on them. The thing I like about them with my guys is that unlike almost everything else i give them, they actually chew this up into small pieces. With some other treat Jimmy James tries to swallow too big of pieces, but these he doesn't.

    Jones-
I have found just the opposite with my new girls teeth. I have only had her about 8 days now, but her tartar is definately going down on certain teeth. I will definately have to continue teeth brushing because she doesn't use all of them for chewing on the bully. JJ's teeth were just cleaned a month or so ago so his tartar isn't very built up (not as though it is easy to tell- he was on tetracycline for a LONG time and now his teeth are massively discolored!).

I did try the raw bone route, but Prudence won't eat them, she just hides them under her blanket to eat at a later time and then lays on top of it and growls at the cats if they come near her "stash".
