    Another Bone Question

    Hi Everyone!
I have a question regarding RMB's. I have been toying with the idea of trying these, mostly to help clean my 2 Jack Russell's teeth, and to give them something fun to chew on.
What would be a good "starter bone" to try this with? I have never given RMB's before, and I am a bit nervous.
Basically, I just need someone to hold my hand and tell me they won't choke and the raw meat won't hurt them. LOL
Also, if I do give them the RMB's, is this in place of a meal, or in addition to?

Thanks in advance for any help!
    :)

A lot of people start with chicken wings.    I tried that, but my dog wasn't interested so we moved on to chicken necks and she LOVES those.    They're very easy to chew.   Just be sure to monitor your dogs.   Healthy Paws sells these big beef bones that they label as beef marrow bones, but they're not the round, nearly meatless bones that are usually called marrow bones - these look more like a little steak.   Anyway, those are fantastic as well.

    Circe221,
I know exactly how you feel, I felt the same way. I started feeding my dogs RMB's about 2 weeks ago and can already tell a difference in their teeth. I gave my bigger dog leg quarters and my smaller dogs(7 & 24 Lbs)chicken legs, this way I could hold them while they ate it until I felt more comfortable that they wouldn't gulp them down or choke, there pros at it now. I still watch them of course but I don't hold it for them anymore.

    Hi,
i also feed a raw diet..its best to start with one protien source, most, including myself started with chicken...when they are used to the diet you can start adding more of a variety....like 3guysandagal said, leg quarters are great for a bigger dog and wings and drumsticks are good for smaller breeds..makes sure you watch very closely when you give them their first raw meal, dogs that have been kibble fed their whole life sometimes forget how to chew their food and will try and gulp it down (my hound was like this), try holding it for them until they learn to chew it and not gulp it down..good luck!! :)

Hi  3guys! Thank you so much for the info.  Yeah, I am really nervous about it, so maybe holding the bones in the beginning will be helpful.  Do you use regular chicken legs, like  drumsticks from the grocery store meat dept?  Also, for your little guy (since my guys are both smaller) do you give him any other types of bones besides the legs?  How often to you give the bones?  I am also planning on starting the Nature's Variety frozen raw, so I am not sure how much of that to give vs. how many  bones.

    Thanks!
