Best type of food for Dalmation

We have a dalmation / whippit cross 10 month old pup. I understand dalmations have special dietary requirements. Right now we feed her a super premium dog food like Praire, dry and canned with a squirt of fish oil on top. I there a meat type that is better for them than others, ie is chicken better than beef? Any other pointers?

    Thanks

It wouldnt hurt tu supplement with raw, or at least alternate between chicken, lam, or beef kibble I find that a variety makes a dog healthier. I know there are some people that feed all raw, and maybe they can give you some pointers for supplementing with raw

Yep, in fact Prarie, which most people on this forum know as Nature's Variety makes a variety of raw diets that are probably sold at the same place you buy your food.

My dog loves them.  I mean loves them.

with a squirt of fish oil on top.

I'm glad this was brought up.I mentioned on another board that most every dog should get fish oil regularly,a dally owner/breeder piped up that dalmations do not fit in this criteria due to purines or something like that. The bottom line was that dalmations should NOT get fish oil.I have no idea about this so couldnt really debate it [8|]

Are there any dalmation owners on the boards,or anyone else know if this is true and why?

Edie I heard about this too and kind-of forgot about it.  I think it has something to do with Dalmations and their genetic problem with epilepsy and brain problems.

    Well that wasn't much help.

The formation of these stones occurs because Dalmatians are a unique breed of dog that excretes uric acid in their urine rather than allantoin as do all other dog breeds. Uric acid and allantoin are both breakdown or waste products derived from a group of chemicals called purines. Purines are part and parcel of the molecules DNA and RNA. That is, purines are part of the genetic coding, which is found in all cells capable of dividing or producing protein. Most cells in fact!
Although Purines, [from which uric acid is formed], are essential for life's processes, a dog's diet does not have to contain them. Dogs can make all the purines they need from other dietary components. That is why, in the case of Dalmatians, to reduce the possibility of urate stones being formed in the urinary system, it is not only important, but it is quite safe to reduce the level of purines in the diet. It is not however, safe, nor is it necessary to reduce the level of protein in the diet to the extremely low level adopted by many Dalmatian owners. That is why, in the case of Dalmatians, to reduce the possibility of urate stones being formed in the urinary system, it is not only important, but it is quite safe to reduce the level of purines in the diet.

     FOODS HIGHEST IN PURINES
Organ meats, red meats, seafoods, and brewer's yeast

    It's to prevent urine stones.
