    Any Utility competitors here?

I'm working on scent articles with my girl and have run into a slight problem.  If I offer her the scented article to sniff, instead of my hand she finds it with no problems.  If I offer her my palm to sniff, she seems to pick up on the leather scent and gets very confused.  Is it "legal" to let the dog smell the article instead of your hand in the ring?

I don't think so.  From the AKC Regs: "...Handlers have the option as to how the dog is sent. Handlers may give

their scent by extending the palm of one hand in front of the dog’s nose or gently touching the dog’s nose, but the arm and hand must be returned

to a natural position before they turn and face the articles..."  I found it on page 39 here http://www.akc.org/pdfs/rulebooks/RO2999.pdf

Perhaps the scent is too hot for her on your palm.  Are you convinced her retrieve is absolutely solid?  What's her retrieve like on the metal articles?

She is very reliable on metal articles, which we do first.  Her retrieve is very solid.  I can't figure out why she seems so confused on the leather.  She tries with all her heart, taking a long time to check them all..over and over.

If the scent is too hot on my palm, what do I do about that?  Do I really need to have her sniff my hand at all?
