    Cal Nat Salmon and Lentils

Seeing if anyone else has tried this food yet.  It's 28% protein, 11% fat and the bag says it is 'low glycemic' which is what I'm looking for for Darby.  I was reading on greatdanelady.com that it's best for dogs with yeasty skin to have no grain, no potato (and low glycemic).

She loves the taste, actually all the dogs wanted to try it, but I have 10lbs of acana and 19lbs of fromm for them to finish out first (hit an awesome sale on the fromm grain free by the way).

I'll of course be accompanying this food with homecooked meat topper and yogurt, as well as the occasional egg and RMB for teefies.

Anyone else try or have thoughts or opinions?   I am a bit leary of Natura (P&G buyout) but my sister uses Cal Nat for her terriers adn they are in awesome condition.

I've not heard of that one.  I try to find one food all 5 can eat; and Sugar is quite allergic to fish, so this salmon one wouldn't work for her.  Sigh.

Willy is prone to skin yeast infections, had them most of his 7 years prior to coming here.  Yup, yeast feeds on the carbs, so grain free is best.

I don't like Fromm, not even their grain free ones; but just now I can't remember why, lol.

I considered it when it first came out because of Jessie's food allergies but the fiber is too high for her ( 6.5%). She does best with less fiber. I wonder if it would make Darby poop more because of the fiber?

Little tiny update since she's only been on it 2 days.

Her poops are actually fine, twice a day so far, compact.   The GREAT news is that her super tough pain in the butt lip fold yeast infection is significantly better. It's not swollen, red or oozy at all. Skin is pink and normal, no yellow gooze.  This only after 2 days.  I HATE that P&G bought out cal. nat but if its the only food I've ever found that works and keeps her comfortable....

It seems she is tolerating my add-ins fine (mostly meat toppers, yogurt, eggs, fruit and veggie snacks).

Willy had almost non stop skin yeast infections for 7 years before he came to me.  When he arrived here, his skin was red, warm to the touch, so sore!  Have not had an outbreak since!  Glad you are seeing improvement as well.  HOORAY!!!

My vet warned me that, as he'd had this issue for so long, most likely his immune system is weakened and he will be prone to it for life now.  So I do keep a strict diet regimen with him.

At this point, I'd had him 48 hours, he'd been to the vet and to the groomer.  Poor guy!  This was in July 2010.

That's great news; I hope she keeps doing well on it.

POor Willy!  I am glad he's doing much better.  I think it must be an immune system issue.  Because I was told by several people how miraculous a raw diet was but she would still continue with the swollen feet, ear and lips, oozing yellow goop and being so itchy.  Too many pathogens in raw? I dunno, but this is working very well, going to stick with it!

Just an update on how this food is working.  Darby finished the bag of Salmon/Pea and has trasitioned onto the Chicken/pea and is doing GREAT. No yeasty feet, no yeasty ear, and the stubbornly inflammed, swollen, goopy yeasty lipfolds are completely dry and normal!! She's not rubbing her face, she's not dropping everything to chew her feet, she's not scratching at her left ear!

So, feeling guilty about P&G owning it, I have googled and shopped and read label after label. There is NOTHING even remotely similar to CN's grain free lines.  They are grain free but also low glycemic, which I theorize is helping her yeasties issue.  No high blood sugar, no fuel for the yeasties.

So unless and until something very very similar (I have a list of can't haves that the girls react to- yeast, grains, alfalfa, flax) we'll be hanging with CN.  I am also adding in THK Zeal for 'topper' rehydrated.  Darby is doing great with this combination.  I can buy the less expensive varieties of THK though for Lexi and Echo, thankfully to cut costs a bit.

This is all a happy ending for us, as DH had requested I cut down spending (all food, not just dogs) and this helps get costs down by half (was feeding 90% thk for a while).

Thought I'd share. This has been wonderful for my yeasty girl!
