Need help w/a training collar......

Remote collars are sort of a mixed blessing.  If used properly, they can help train a dog.  If not used properly, you can wind up with a confused scared dog.  If you are going to use one, find someone who knows how and see if you can observe and learn.  You will probably get a range of responses here, ranging from" don't use this instrument of the devil" to "take a reward based obedience class".  I would choose the obedience class first, then use a collar only after the dog knew what was wanted but refused to comply.

My Thor was a puller and could literally pull me off my feet and drag me down the road.  The prong helped, but what REALLY did the trick was to work with him on a long line.  On the long line he never knew when I might say something important, so he kept those big gsd ears tuned in.  Once he really started to listen to me, he became an absolute dream, on or off lead, short or long line.

I used a prong, so can't say that I'm against them totally.  BUT, quite often any training collar becomes a quick fix that doesn't quite fix the root of the problem.

I would try an easy-walk or sensation harness first.

What is a "link pinch remote training collar"?  To me a pinch collar is a prong collar or a NeckTech and a remote collar is an e-collar.  I would personally not use an e-collar to train leash walking/pulling (and I'm not against e-collars or prong/pinch collars).

I've had the best luck with a Sporn harness.  My dog was a terrible puller as a puppy and even with early enrollment in puppy class she was hard to get control of with a leash and collar.  First we tried the Easy Walk harness, it was ok and got her going in the right direction some, but not enough.  We then went to a nose halter, on advice of our trainer.  She walked perfectly on this, but would shut down and obviously hated her walks.  Then I started using a halter much like a Sporn harness, then the Sporn itself and I have had the best success with these.  She still does much better with any halter than the leash on collar, but even there she has improved.  This morning I was walking along with her and looked down and thought "I would have never dreamed I would see this dog heel like this a year ago".  She's not perfect, especially when excited, but she had come light-years since we started using these Sporn and Sporn-like halters.  I now use a really soft flexible halter on her most of the time, not Sporn, and she still does well.  If she starts getting back into bad habits the Sporn comes back out for a couple of days.

THANKS everyone for all your feedback!!  I did initially have success with the Easy Walk harness but now he is pulling again........obedience class didn't work either :-(

I am afraid of the long lead as he really gets agressive when he sees other dogs on a leas; of course he is much better when both dogs are offleash.....

I am going to check out the Sporn and see if that helps - thanks again!!!!

FWIW...my last boxer Max was a bad puller. He was big and strong enough to drag me down the street too.

I put a gentle leader on him and it was like walking a totally different dog. I had finger control at that point. I could stop him with my pinky. Might want to look into those. It was a blessing for me.

Can you use a GL on a Boston Terrier?  I'm genuinely curious.  If not, I like the Easy Walk harness (or whatever else is like it).

I think their noses would be too smooshy to really work - although, I'm not a huge fan of those to begin with! I've yet to see a dog truly pull through an easy walk with proper training. Just remember - you can't just put something on a dog and expect it to work, there is training that needs to go along with any tool you use!

Yes, it can work on a BT. My German boxer had a extremely short nose too. You just have to make sure you get one with a thinner strap for over the nose. They make them purposely for dogs that are brachy's

To each their own. I dont necessarily like choke collars, but I know plenty of people that use them and as long as you use them correctly..I guess there doing there job. This was 10 years ago and I didnt know about the easy walk harness. The gentle lead worked wonders for me. My dog never disliked it and tried to pull it off (like I have seen some dogs do) and you have to have common sense to use one also...you cant jerk a dog around with one of those on their face (not that you should JERK your dog anyway) just like Erica said.

I do want to address something here.....if the puppy class didn't work, it's likely because the owner didn't learn enough.  Training doesn't really train the pup, but rather teaches the owner to do so.

Consistently using the same techniques, the sameness of everything is usually the key.
