I took Cannella to a 2 hour scenting class but on by the Marin Humane Society on Sat. It was very interesting and she did 'ok' at it. I tried it with her ball first as she seems obcessed but there were too many other interesting things so the following runs were done with treats.
In case you've never seen it before they put boxes out and then you have a treat bag. You hold the dog and the helper shows the bad (treat) to the dog and gets them really enthusiastic over it, then pretends to hide them in the boxes. She goes from box to box pretending to put it in. Then you let them dog loose and follow them as they sniff and search it out. Once they find it you feed them more treats while their heads are inside the box and the helper finally pulls the box away. The dogs really, really love it.
So of course I had to try it on the older gal, Angelina who is an expert at finding and sniffing stuff out without ever having gone to one of these classes. She picked it up immediately and talk about focus! It is a good activity for rainy days!
The advance classes eventially switch from food to scents, like white birch, but that does not happen for a very, very long time.
Sorry, no pictures!
