    She's grown SO much (agility-related)

And I don't mean physically. Dahlia is still at a lean 50ish or so pounds. ;-) But emotionally and as far as confidence is concerned, Dahlia has grown SO MUCH in the past year. I can't believe how much agility class has really brought out more and more of her personality. I've heard a lot of people say that it raises the confidence level of dogs who need it raised, but I didn't really believe it 100% until I saw it with my own eyes!

This past Wednesday we had an amazing day in agility. Usually Dahlia is happy, but slow and very cautious. SO very cautious. Before every jump in a sequence she'll pause, look to me, and then go over. It's been a bit frustrating because she seems to be SO AFRAID to do things on her own. Our instructor has suggested that perhaps everything in her life was controlled when she was young and that seems likely based on what we've seen from her. She still asks for permission to get up on the furniture and this is not something we taught her.

But this last class, she was very excited, very amped up. She looked like a real agility dog. She took jumps fast and in good form, had no problem jumping up on the dog walk (we're just beginning contacts so the dog walk was only a foot and a half or so above the ground) and turning around on it, even recovered quickly from the bang of the teeter. She once actually took off and got the zoomies. We also played a game of tug where she was leaping for the toy when she lost her grip on it and one time even jumped up and bounced off me with her front feet and grabbed the toy mid-air as I tossed it.

I know most people wouldn't want that, but with Dahlia, it's HUGE. I would write that in 50pt font if I could. REALLY HUGE. Dahlia is wonderful, lovely, and so very sweet, but she's so reserved and polite. To see her so excited about things that she broke out and ran around on her own for a minute was amazing. To see her so into playing tug that she leapt for the toy was beyond amazing.

I can't say what happened this last week to make her so excited, but I really hope that she will show that intensity again.

Thanks for reading everyone. I just really wanted to share my joy with this dog with everyone. I love her SO much. She's just the best.

Rock on, Dahlia! How nice for her to just cut loose and be a DOG! Major kuddos for you for getting her out and letting her build herself up!

Great for Dahlia and really great for you! Isn't it wonderful to see a dog act like a dog?

I see this so much in my agility classes. When the dog just breaks loose and ZOOMS around the field with the biggest grin. The owners don't know what to do, laugh or punish the dog. LOL We say LAUGH! Cuz it means your dog is finally coming out of their shell.

YAY Dahlia! And YAY you for sticking with it

I would NEVER punish her for it!  It's an expression of joy on her part and all I did was laugh and call her to me (and I was happy she came running to me when I called too).  We have one dog who runs around a LOT, especially when he doesn't get things right and we all just laugh at him too.  He's the class clown and I think he's helping Dahlia to loosen up.

And YES it's wonderful seeing her act like a dog and enjoy herself this much!  I almost didn't start agility because I didn't think she'd be "an agility dog."  And maybe she'll never compete, but she's having so much fun with it and so am I.

Amazing isn't it? Happy to hear you are having such fun. Curious as to who you are training under. There is a USDAA trial in Cato this weekend. There are a lot of CPE trials in the area, more so than the USDAA. I've never done the CPE but people say it is really laid back and a lot of fun, if you ever do decide you might want to try some competing. It's a great time.

i find it amazing how much good agility does for both dog and person. it truly has the ability to bring a dog out of it's shell, give it a chance to shine and be a "good dog". it gives the person much joy to work with and play with their dog. it brings them closer together and bonds them. i don't know what i did before agility! wish i knew about it earlier for all my past dogs. i do cpe and it is great! recommend it for all those starting in agility.

Oh shoot.  I didn't realize there was one in Cato this weekend!  I really want to get to one just to watch and take some photos.  This is where we go for training: http://www.itsallaboutthedogstraining.com/default.html

We have SUCH a great time there.  Maybe we'll get to competing, or maybe we won't.  It doesn't matter either way for me and since Dahlia is already 5 and we only began the journey last year (and she's slow at picking things up!), we may never get to competing.  I just love doing it and so does she so the competition aspect is no big deal.

It's great that she's loving it enough to go a little crazy!  lol
