Dog food causing gas?

    Dog food causing gas?

I adopted a pit/lab/boxer mix from the humane society almost four weeks ago, and in the past week or so her gas has become almost unbearable.

I feed my dogs Blue Buffalo fish and (something I forget) so I feed them a high quality food.

When we adopted Caliope she had severe diarrhea from stress due to being in the humane society for the second time. It is finally getting under control.

I see that there is a "beano" for dogs but I would like to use that as a last resort.

Any advice anyone can give me would be very much appreciated.

I've noticed with different kibbles in the past that my dogs ar emore gassy than others. Is there a reason they need to be on the fish protein? Maybe try something w/o fish and see if that helps?

Usually grains/starches make my girls gassy.  You might try a probiotic powder or yogurt added to their food.

Many of the fish formulas, including Blue, which is a great food, can cause gas.  When I feed a fish formula, I add a couple heaping tablespoons of plain yogart with live, active cultures. However, I have german shepherds so a smaller amount might be called for for your dog. Keep in mind as well that at the shelter she wasn't getting super premium food, so this has been a major jolt to her system.  Something that helps when the runs hit is PLAIN pie pumpkin, not the prespiced kind.  It's like doggie Pepto....helps with either hard or soft stools.

    Thank you for adopting!

Have you changed the treats you're giving her?  I've noticed over the years with different dogs that some will do fine on a particular food or even treats, while another dog will be gassy on it.  Since this is a fairly new issue, I'd think about if there's anything different, that she may be eating, that's contributing to the gas, such as new green grass.  Some probiotics might be helpful.

Welcome to the forum, btw.  We'd love to see pictures of your new girl.

welcome to the forum!  and Jackie is right we all love pictures Big Smile

plain yogurt with live cultures is a great idea that will help strengthen the gut after the turmoil and likely poor food from the shelter

Check the blue buffalo for egg, that certainly can cause gas in dogs but it might be just a transition period.

Also I give my dog Gas-x when he's got gas, it is safe for dogs and recommended for a dog that might be bloating.  I would just check with your vet about dosage as my dog is very large but I believe one capsule is fine for a dog

Good point about the treats too
