This was great!!!  Some really great dogs these!!   I hear that this is THE place to train on the east coast.

They both are such a blast to watch work.  I absolutely love Betsy's Dealer.  There's just something about him you can't help but love.

LOL  I'll have to remember to tell Betsy that when I see her Thursday night.  I know people come from a couple of hours away to train there.

I believe this is where Vivian Bregman (I think this is her last name)  trains.  Yes??  She has Border Collies.  I know her from the IACP.

Anyway, it's wonderful to see how top competitors train.  Thanks.

Yep, Vivian trains at Top Dog.  In fact, one of her dog's was bred by Betsy.

Neat video. Love the dogs. Exercises seem a bit different from what we have here.

That video was training and conditioning, not the real excercises.  But, yes, some of the excercises are different in other parts of the world.  Tyler & Petra competed on the USA team at Crufts in March.  They spent months learning the obedience excercises that are done in England.  Luckily, one of the instructors at Top Dog is from England, so she was able to help.  BTW- they tied for 2nd place individually.  Smile

Which I did appreciate and should've made clearer. I'm pretty sure the heel at the end was close to the final product as far as the handlers posture(?) goes. Plus I don't think I've ever seen anybody do a retrieve exercise quite that way.

Sorry!  I thought you thought the video was of actual excercises.  The heeling with Dealer (the Golden) is like what we do in the ring here.  The way Petra was holding her arm in their segment isn't allowed in the ring.  All that weird/odd stuff is to keep the dogs happy and up.  Same with the way Petra & Tyler did the retrieve.  In a trial, he would have had to sit in front of Petra.  Then they would have waited for the judge to tell Petra to take the dumbell.  Also, on both the go out (Deale & Betsy) and the retrieve, that "pushing" movement isn't allowed.  As soon as I find a video of the real thing, I'll post it.  I love seeing the differences in the excercises from country to country (heck, even organization to organizarion.  LOL).

Such happy dogs!!! We do restrained recalls, similar to the retrieve that was done on the video. Someone holds the dog back, pushing lightly on the chest, to trigger oppositional reflex. The handler RUNS away, and calls the dog. Teaches them to fly into itBig Smile One day, we'll do retrieves, LOL, and I'm glad I saw that. I never would have thought of restrained retrieves.

This is what our highest class looks like (it's missing the stays ie. down stay and sit stay):

We have four levels of classes and the highest shares the rules with FCI international obedience class. That pair, Elina & bc Sina, took home the world championship in June, they've finished second in 2008. Finns actually took places one through four this summer, but had a slight off day in the team competition and finished with silver.

And since you have retrievers you may appreciate this showing by a Norwegian pair:

They finished with silver in 2009.

Also a good exercise is to have an assistant holding the dog with the dumbbell or even both the dog and the dumbbell in front of it or a bunch of other variations. You might run or just verbally get the dog eager to come to you and then ask the dog to retrieve. Then the assistant releases the dog, which will bring the dumbbell to you at full speed.

As I haven't had an assistant I've gone about teaching my dog, Hiili, that sitting with the dumbbell in front of me is the best thing ever. She has received her daily chow from it countless times. It has worked ie. even if we've done specific speed retrieve exercises only a couple of times she'll go at full tilt most times and will have at least decent speed every time (false pregnancies get her a bit disinterested).

This is Hiili and what she understands retrieve to be:

You may be able to tell that she's wagging her tail like crazy as it is a bit fuzzy in the picture.

Wow! That's intense! I wouldn't be able to do obedience, if you had to run that much, here. I can only do the few steps that you have to do in AKC obedience. I love the sidestep exersize. I liked the sit out of motion, too, and the no ring gates.

Your dog's front is beautiful! I am going to go feed my dog dinner in the front position, now! LOL Thanks!!!

Well that's the world championships, so the heeling sequence is rather lengthy. Regular competitions have shorter heels, they will, however, include all turns while running in the highest class.

Thanks. The most important thing is that the dog feels comfortable that close to the handler. For Hiili it's always been easy, but with other dogs I've had to devote more time to get them to enjoy being in such close proximity to me. With Hiili it's been about getting her eager to please me and feeding her after some exercises has definately helped. I may use a conditioned reinforcer to let her know that she did good and that she may have her food.

Bean is one that I have to WORK at touching and being close to. She is very aloof, by nature. I always tell people that she doesn't love anybody but herself, LOL. She is a Chinese Crested, and more "old" type than "new", flashy type. She's a really cool dog, but a challenge, every step of the way. That's why I love her so much!!!
