    Canidae experiences

Hi everyone, this is my first post as I sit next to a new bag of Canidae ALS that I plan on switching the kids over to. However, I just terrorized myself on the internet with some awful reviews of Canidae after 2008. I'm not prone to believing everything anyone writes, nor do I think that dog food is a one brand fits all dogs, but I'd love to hear from some dog owners that feed Canidae currently. I'd just like some peace of mind after reading the crazy reviews and I figure if there are some established posters on here that get back to me whether good or bad, then I can at least know that it's not some troll writing. Thank you!

I haven't fed canidae for probably 6 years now, so I don't have any helpful reviews for you :(   How is the switch goign so far?

I fed canidae a long time ago (years) and didn't really like the results. I recently tried it again though wanting to get something cheaper. we are on our 2nd bag and the dogs are doing great. I'm actually pretty happy. Its not too rich and doesn't give them gas. I don't go for their grain free or fish formulas though. I didn't really think the ingreds were all that great.

My two older dogs loved it. My senior is a very picky eater and I have to spread "doggie heroin" (shaved pet botanicals rolled food) to get her to eat her old stuff or she will just stare at the bowl until it sprouts cheese or something else yummy. The puppy is not quite sure, I put a very small amount in his since he still has a bag left of his old stuff left and he's picking out the Canidae, but he is eating it after a bit. We'll see how the morning goes with everyone. Fingers crossed!

I too switched before they changed their recipe and I switched because I didn't like the long term affects of Canidae.

Gracie was on Canidae around 2004 (at less than a year old), again in 2007'ish, and again in 2008.  For whatever reason, no matter which version she's had (we tried chicken, lamb, and there's a fish, now), she gets some kind of issue with her skin - drier than normal and gets oddball reactivity to things that (at least when she was younger) could lead to infections or pustules.  Could have been anything, really, which is why I kept going back to the food since it's pretty good overall and one she'll eat consistently... (she's oddly picky, too.  She outright refuses California Natural and even EVO - and I've learned to read her that even if she likes it one day, if it gave her gas or loose stools, she's refusing it the next few meals and then we know she's done once she's refused it.)   Anyway, her skin and coat suffered in correspondence with the timing of a new bag of Canidae.  So I stopped.  She's just one dog and I have no real hard evidence that says this was the trouble.  But it's a trouble I haven't had when she's on other foods.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Glenmar, I was wondering what long term effects you are referring to? I made the switch from Nutro natural choice, but I started getting uncomfortable with all the bad press. My dogs all have great coats, shiny and full, but I've noticed their stools are not firm about half the time so I figured it can't hurt (I hope!) to change their diets and see what agrees with everyone. I swear, things shouldn't have to be so darn complicated to get a decent dog food!

    What long term affects?

I fed it last year to a young Aussie who was having trouble keeping weight on.He ate it for 6 months, got his weight up and had no problems with it. I did notice extra tartar on his teeth probably because the kibbles were larger and he had to chew them more..I switched him back to American Natural Premium only because that's what my other two eat.If ANP were to become unavailable to me Canidae ALS would be a food I would consider.

I used ALS for almost a year but switched b/c of inconsistencies with poop, like the dogs would be fine for a week, then get diarrhea for no reason.  The stools were never consistent.  None of my dogs have known allergies or digestive conditions, but I think in general they just do better on foods with "limited ingredients" and not the ALS which had what like four different meat types?

We've used it for years with great results.

I used it 3-4 years ago, & had very good luck with it.  The only reason that I stopped using it was because the store that carried it went out of business, & I could no longer buy locally.

The chicken and rice is part of Baily's rotation.  He was quite pudgy a few years ago.  We went through 8 different foods trying to find one that agreed with him and he would lose weight on.  This formula did the trick...for him.  I know they have changed it a bit, but he still does well when he is on it.

Thanks, everyone. I made a hard switch to Canidae because the bf did not tell me that we were out of dog food before he headed out of town. I went to two different places looking for a small bag of their old food so I could make it a gradual switch, but couldn't find it. They actual did very well with very little stomach upsets for either adult dog. One day of mushy stools that did not look any different (except a better color) than their old and now I've got firm piles on everyone except the puppy who is almost finished with his bag and in the middle of the gradual change.
