Interesting thing about Pet Botanics food roll

So, I was put-sing around the pet store and saw pet botanics food rolls. Thinking it may be another option to the natural balance food rolls (for treat trainnig), I checked out the ingredients on the itty bitty sample roll. The ingredients were great - beef liver, beef heart, so on and so forth. All the good organ meat stuff. (chicken formula was like this too). So, I went looking for the bigger rolls. However, when I found the bigger rolls (they have the mid-sized and large rolls just like NB) and looked at the ingredients, the ingredients changed for the worse as the size of roll went up! I couldn't believe it. The itty bitty sample roll was packed full of organ meats. The mid- size roll dropped an organ meat or two and sub'd it with a grain product. The largest roll only had 1 meat ingredient and the rest was starches and grains! This seems sooooo sneaky and underhanded to me and should be illegal unless they actually change the name of the product. (they are the exact same name no matter the size of the roll)

Here's how it is advertised: (using the main ingred's)

Lamb & Rice Dog Food Roll
Ingredients: Lamb Meat, Lamb Hearts, Lamb Kidneys, Lamb Lungs, Whole Wheat Flour, Brown Rice, Wheat Bran, Lamb Fat

Beef & Rice Dog Food Roll
Ingredients: Beef Hearts, Beef Kidneys, Beef Lungs, Whole Wheat Flour, Brown Rice, Wheat Bran, Beef Fat

Looks good right?  I can't find the ingred's anywhere online that shows the difference in ingred's vs size of roll, but I saw it on the packaging in the store. When I brought it up to the check out girl she said "well it probably costs more money to make the bigger the roll" as if this was an acceptable answer lol

Anyway, this makes me wonder about other dog foods now......if this is a common practice or not.

I was thinking the same thing as the clerk (not that it's right).  And also what you were thinking about other brands.  Another thought is that the bigger rolls are older.  It's a long shot, but maybe the ingredients have changed since they were packaged.

I'll have to check the NB rolls next time I'm out & about.

Julie I have used the Pet botanics rolls for a long time (beef mostly sometimes lamb) for Bugsy's thyroid meds and also for training and kongs.  I think they are undergoing a formula change because the last time I went to buy them I noticed SOME medium and large size rolls had egg as an ingredient - he's violently allergic to egg so I went into a mini-depression as I won't use any of them now.  Remember they have 6 months to change the labels to match the ingredients.

It sounds to me that the mini-rolls by you are the older ones - the ones without egg.  The new ones have egg - that is my best guess anyway as I've been using it for so long and egg has never been an ingredient Sad  I don't have anywhere local that sells the NB rolls so I am really bummed

You are probably right. That's just so crazy. They must be totally trying to save money and are not worried about quality!

Nobody sells NB rolls near you? I find that hard to believe, they are very popular around here. The prices have gone up leaps and bounds due to the demand over the last few years here.

I can get NB rolls but I can't think of the nearest place - Petco carries them but they are about 25 miles from here - just seems out of the way LOL when we have a million places much closer than that - oh well I bought a few of the non-egg rolls when I noticed so I have time to figure it out!

Can Bugs do dairy? I'd probably just do cheese cubes, LOL. They're perfect pill pockets. Oscar Meyer also has a new, all beef, no preservative hot dog that will work, nicely. Poultry hearts are great, but I know Bugs doesn't do fowl.

Thanks Jennie - we do cheese and hot dogs for him with no issues, I just preferred using a 'whole food'.  We also use liverwurst, lunch meat, leftover meat, etc.

He will take the thyroid tablet in anything but he is a PIA about taking benadryl (4 at a time) - he can extricate them from anything and spit them out. The benadryl has to be in something extra yummy and stinky

LOL  Caleb is the same way!  I was crushing them and putting them on his food.  Then, by accident I got the capules (I buy the generic at WalMart).  These capsules don't open like other ones, but I just toss them on his food and Caleb eats them right up with no problem.
