Bone crunching?

    Bone crunching?

    I just gave Tyson a raw pork bone. I had frozen it and when he was chewing on it, it sounded like he was actually crunching through the bone to try to get to the marrow and I took it away from him because I suspected that he was actually eating some of the bone. Is this a problem so I know for next time?

     I've never seen a big dog NOT consume a pork bone. Emma, my 19 lb PRT, would eat them.

    hahah like the literal bone though?

     Yes.

     If it's raw and he's actually chewing it, let him have it.  Sandy gets chicken wings, legs. Pretty much any thing that I can find with bone in. It strengthens their jaws and helps their teeth.

    Yep, Bailey eats pork ribs all the time, including the bone.

    Oh ok, thanks for the reassurance. I'd love to feed him raw but the parentals arent so pleased about having the dog lying there eating raw meat so I get away with giving him some not meaty bones to chew on from time to time. I was worried about the bones causing blockage and stuff.

      He should be fine, but you should know that bones can break or chip their teeth, cause blockages and other problems;

    Always supervise him when he has a bone.

    Raw bones are excellent to give dogs. I feed my dogs and cats a raw diet, so bone is a critical part of their diet.

    Never feed cooked bones because they can become brittle and crack causing a world of trouble (splinters that tear, etc..).

     Raw bones are pretty malleable and eaily digested by the body.

    If you are just looking for recreational bones to give your dog, you can try deer antlers. They are not messy and they last forever! You can get them locally (farmer's market, butchers, friends) or you can order them online.

     Thanks for the advice! I really wish I could just switch him to a raw diet
