How much heart for Maze?

    How much heart for Maze?

Maze is 48lbs. She should be 50lbs.  Janet suggested added raw heart to her diet. I use beef heart for Sandy so that's what I'd be using for Maze.

How much should Maze be getting a week?

*edit* DANG IT!! MODS!! Please move this to nutrition.. I coulda sworn I put it there..

I replied in your other thread, but I'll reply here too.

Our cardiologist recommended feeding 4-8oz of beef heart daily.  Our guys are a little larger than Maze, but honestly, taurine isn't something that you can overdose so those amounts should be fine.

Thanks Amanda! I need to get some weight on her. And it's already measured out in 4oz so it'll be easier.

Beef heart is good stuff -- it's good for the humans too!!  Amanda's figures are fine.

You can't overdose in taurine, that I know of, but I would watch Maze's stools for a bit! Even as a muscle meat, it's quite rich, and you might have cannon-butt going on if you feed too much at a time *G*. You might need to split it up through the day.

Otherwise I would say the above folks know more than I about amounts for heart health, good luck!

Maze has had beef heart before. I just never thought to feed it regularly.  But I will be careful as I really don't want a case of cannon-butt. LOL. I love that term!

It's also pretty high in iron, so keep an eye on that.  You CAN overdose on ironBig Smile

4 oz of raw beef heart has 4.9 mg of iron. For whatever reason, the amino acids are not listed. It's just something to keep your eye on, when you get excited about heartsBig Smile

     WEEE HEARTS!!

Lol.. I dunno where that came from. But you just gave me something to research!

I was ready to feed Emma straight hearts, for a minute, LOL. Some epileptic dogs have a taurine deficiency. The excess iron would have been *very* hard for her, with her liver issues, to handle. She did get plenty of heart, just not whole meals of it.

LOL! If it makes you feel better, for a split second I had envisioned feeding Maze different types of heart for the rest of her life. Lol
