    Grandma Lucy's & Homecooking ?'s

Patty, my dear Patty, is my picky eater. She eats whatever I put down (usually, lol), but she never looks happy about it unless it has something (meat, yogurt, veggies, etc) mixed in. This morning I was out on a dog food/coffee run and I saw GL's dehydrated dog food (it's comparable to THK, I believe). WTH, I decided to get the smallest bag to try it with Patty. She literally *INHALED* it! And her poop today was teeny tiny, no stomach upset even though I abruptly changed her food. But, it got me thinking after reading what was in it. How difficult is it to home-cook for a small (25#) dog? What are the basics for a newbie? I'm not looking to get too crazy here, but if it's easy enough and less expensive than kibble (I currently buy Orijen and Canidae Grain Free), why not try it?! I noticed this GL's food is mainly freeze dried potatoes and lamb meat chunks with veggies/fruit.

I'm not going to say home cooked is cheaper -- not at all.  I buy 10# of meat a week for 75# of dog ... so divide that by 3.  I'm also adding about 2# of whitefish (frozen) to that per week.

Veggies are NOT cheap.  I'm getting probably 10 pounds of sweet potato alone a week -- and sometimes they are $1.29 a pound -- And that's only one out of 5 veggies.  But it is the most expensive part of the veggies.  Maybe anotheer $12 for veggies in addition to the sweets I use.  (again divide that by 3 for one cocker)

Now -- I'll grant you that I do NOT have a freezer, nor do I hunt hard for bodegas and produce stands (cos I work 8 hours a day with a 40 minute commute each way and I just plain don't have time nor am I physically able to "shop";).

It's not hard -- but neither would I feed one dog something entirely different than I'd feed the others.

Now I will maintain that home-cooking does help keep down health issues.  I know exactly what goes in their food so I know whe something doesn't agree.

Here is a site that has a good variety of different meals, they are the recipes for halo dog food. http://www.halopets.com/resources/homemade-pet-food-recipes.html Your dog will be happy and healthier if you cook for her. I change to different ingredients every 5 days and never have any problems with my dogs stomachs. The dog food companies have convinced us we can not do this but I want to tell your you can and I have checked do it for less. I cook a 5 day supply and freeze in 2 cup containers anything I can not use in 3 days. I use a supplement http://www.platinumperformance.com/Canine/departments/2/ to make sure everything is covered. I say do it for 3 months and see the difference you wont believe it. The one big thing that I have noticed their teeth stay clean. If you want to see if its cost effective buy all ingredients separately and compare at the end of the month.

I have heard some great success stories with people that cook their own food. Sometimes I make a batch of boiled white potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, I mash it all up and add it to the dog food. They love it!!

The only issue about cooking your own food is: the food itself won't give them everything they need to stay healthy. There are "extras" they need that is found in dog food and not home cooking.

Do some research online and speak to your vet (if he's the type that won't only push the brands they sell).

Please do not tell people their dogs will be happier and healthier if you cook for them. Some people don't have time to cook for themselves let alone their dogs. Tootsie is very happy with kibble and shes healthy.

Something I looked into, and almost, almost did.... Balanceit. It's a supplement in a tub, and you purchase recipes for the dog, from their site. It was like $20 for a recipe, and you buy the tub of vitamins (like a premix in kibble, it's really cool!) and cook for them. I think it's a GREAT way to get into homecooking, without as much worry.

Some supplements are made to go on top of kibble, and will not come close to balancing a homemade diet, especially if it's off in any of the major minerals you have to get in there, like copper and zinc.

Yeah, what she said.  Not to mention those of us who don't like to cook.

I am sorry I think my dogs are happier and healthier because I cook for them and I recommend it to anyone that wants to do it. One of my dogs was very unhealthy on commercial food and it has made a huge difference in the quality of his life. Some wont cook for there dogs because the dog food companies have convinced them they cant keep their dogs healthy on home cooking. I encourage those that have the time and the desire to do it.

I'd like to try some GL.. maybe if I can find it at this little food store here...

I don't have the time to cook for my dogs nor do I have the space to cook in bulk and keep in our tiny frige.

No biggie though, I've come to a compromise with The Honest Kitchen (dehydrated) food plus a few extras.   Dogs look great adn love the taste.

Being a cost obscessive person that I am, I once worked out cost per serving of THK vs. doing iit all on my own from scratch.  It was within PENNIES for me, a few pennies more for THK, but for those extra pennies, I'll take the convenience for now.

As I said before Tootsie is very happy and she also just had a full work up at the vets and besides her weight, which she is already losing, everything came back in the normal range. You have every right to your opinion, but don't tell me mine or anyone elses dog will be happier and healthier if they had their meals cooked for them.

That's the way to say it!  Smile  I kind of figured that's what you meant.

Tiffy, I think you sort of manipulated what she said...she said:

This is her honest opinion that *her* dogs are healthier and happier because she home cooks for them. I don't take offense to what Dawnben said. Apollo is on kibble, it works for him. Patty & Molson are now on THK, and it works for them. No biggie.

No harm, no foul. I wasn't offended by this in anyway. I've learned manipulating quite well from a very misunderstood corgi (according to her).
