    Sweet Potato Treats

Making your own all natural dog treat is an excellent alternative to rawhide. SWEET POTATO CHEWY Ingredients: • 1 Large Sweet Potato, washed & dried Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 275° F 2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Cut off one side of the sweet potato lengthwise, as close to the edge as possible. Cutting the side of the potato first allows you to then turn the potato onto this flat surface that you have just created. Having a stable area to rest the potato will make it easier to cut the potato into slices. Don't discard that first piece, it comes out just as yummy as the rest! 4. Cut the rest of the potato into 1/3" slices, no smaller than 1/4". 5. Place them on the prepared baking sheet. 6. Bake for 3 hours, turning half way through. 7. Cool completely on a wire rack. Storing - Although these treats are dried, you will want to keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 4 months

Dawnben great recipe! I cheated and used sweet potato sticks from Trader Joes. I also had no parchment paper, so I used foil. They're in the oven now, so I'll let you know.

I am thrilled to see this recipe   Big Smile

I will not give my dogs rawhide because I simply think that it is just too hard to digest.

I have tried the horse's hooves sold at PetsMart.  They were recommended by a dog trainer that works there, but the stinky smell is unbelievable!  I guess it should be no surprise because the hooves are nothing but horse toenails Ick!

I am curious...do the potatoes get nice and chewy like a rawhide or do they eat them pretty quick??  I have three large dogs...

I have made them a few times and think if you have a dehydrator they would be chewer. The yams work better and you kind of score the slices with a knife and they dry better. also make sure the slices are thick enough. The end result is my dogs love them one dog gobbles them and the other takes them and savers them for about 5 minutes. They smell great. You can also buy them they are called Sam's yams I think he has probably perfected them.

Sam's Yams are a HIT here. They are the current bedtime snack :) The good-sized bag I got was about $5 and I decided it was worth not fiddling with yams all afternoon LOL.

Whoa!  I have GOT to try this! I'm gonna go out tonight and get some yams and dehydrate them!! I got a used food dehydrator at a garage sale a few months ago...for $15 and I'm hoping it does the trick on these!  I've been thinking about going to the butcher to get some scraps too to dehydrate...looks like I have my weekend planned!  I'll post pics and let you guys know how it goes!

Thanks again for this!  My pooches with sensitive tummies love their pumpkin...I'm wondering if a pumpkin sliced up would work as well too?

I made some of these today and they are a HUGE hit to all the dogs!!!

Gee.... great idea....but arn't the potatoes really hard to cut?  I bought them a few times and tried to cut small slices for us... ( like to do them almost the same way but not so long that they are really chewy...and I add butter while they are baking )  it was really hard to cut them.

You do need a sharp knife. Cut one small slice off the side and then cut thick 1/3 inch strips along the length. each potato only makes about 5 strips depending in how big the potato is.

Oh thank doG!  I thought it was just me!  I got the ole knife sharpener out and then it went easier!  ALSO, I found the thinner 1/4" pieces cooked better for me!

I've got more potatoes to do up tomorrow!!  :)

Finally getting around to making these...TODAY!  Thanks for the recipe.

My treats came out softer than I thought they would.  The slices were about 1/4"...perhaps I should have cut them thinner.  Or, maybe my oven required a higher temperature.  The boyz still liked them a lot though.  Heidi, turned her nose up in the air.  Picky girl.

I froze them and will offer them as frozen treats...yummy!

I cooked them at 375 this week and they came out chewier.

Mine always turn out a little harder!  :(  They still love them though!
