Grain Free Question

    Grain Free Question

I've been feeding grain free forever now, avoiding corn and wheat, for itchy skin issues - but I'm wondering about oatmeal in their diet. It seems like it would be okay. I did add it to their crock pot chicken gruel I made this weekend and they loved it. I have to admit, it tasted really good and it made the gravy a little thicker, which was nice. I would remove the bones and add some dumplings for a meal for myself it was so good.

Is oatmeal generally okay in a grain free diet???? Sorry if this is an obviously stupid question......

It's oats - it IS a grain.  On the rare occasions I add grain (yep, for thickness if I get it WAY watery) either I use barley or oatmeal.

But it's very individual -- some dogs do ok on it some don't.  For every dog that does FINE ... you're gonna find someone who will post and say it's the worst.  But for me, it's better than rice by a long shot.

My dogs eat a grain free diet, but for upset stomach days, they get oatmeal. (I have dogs who won't eat rice). No one has an issue with it. Oatmeal is actually one of Aesop's favorite foods...he'll abandon a dinner for it

Caleb's on a grain free diet, too.  But when I make training treats, I use oatmeal.  Somewhere I read that even tho oatmeal is a grain, it's considered one of the better ones.  But, like others said, it depends on the dog.

On a side note, when Caleb had stomach issues, I substituted plain baked potatos for rice.

My dogs actually do BETTER with some oatmeal than they do on grain free. Whole grains, in moderation, as long as the dog isn't allergic, are really fine.

I thought I had read somewhere that of all grains oatmeal is the best...... they really love it so I hope they do well on it. I was adding some brown rice and their stools were great and they like it, but the itching has been off the charts - I know it's that time of the year for pollen and grass, etc., but I also believe the rice may have something to do with it. Plus, don't they need some carbs in their diet???

All I know is the stuff smells and tastes so good, I feel really good about feeding it to them....
