tracheas

    tracheas

I was at a dog show and a raw vendor was selling some bags of treats for $5.  They told me the tracheas don't give dogs diarrhea so I bought a bag.  Nikon had one at the show and he had the squirts the next day.  I thought maybe it was nerves from the show.  Then last night we had company, so I took out the second one, sawed it into three pieces and gave one to each dog.  This morning we went out for breakfast and came home to diarrhea mess.  All three dogs went right out and were squatting.  Upon further inspection, someone's even bleeding a little bit.  It's been several hours, everyone is clean and has had some meds to soothe their digestive systems.  For dinner they had overcooked white rice with a few pieces regular kibble to make it palatable.

Has anyone had this problem with tracheas?  I'm giving the last one to a friend.  Kinda sucks though since the dogs loved them and took a while to chew them up.  There was no barking or even a curious yip when people came over, just chewing.

Bugsy has had the crunchy tracheas (pig and cow) and had raw emu trachea with no issue - I love feeding them because they have natural gluc/chon

sorry to hear it upset the puppers!

Doesn't bother mine, either. That stinks! I get the dried ones from Best Bully Sticks.

Mine haven't had a problem either, but they all do pretty well with the dried chew type items anyway.

The only chew that's ever been a problem was the one time I gave Aesop a raw pig's foot...god help me that timeIndifferent It was so horrid that even though neither Grimm nor Jules had a problem with them, no one has been allowed them since.

A majority of our guys can't stomach the dried tracheas.  They do great with raw beef, pork, & lamb tracheas though.

I'm wondering if I just don't feed enough raw for them to have the right enzymes?  Some of Nikon's diarrhea contained full piece of the rings of cartilage, stuff that a dog should digest.  Yeah, I was looking at the poop, lol.  I gave the last one to my friend since her dog eats grain-free and various raw stuff on a regular basis.

Nikon acted very sick yesterday.  Besides the diarrhea he just slept or moped around with his ears flat.  He is very energetic almost to the point of anxiousness but acted very subdued and even cuddled with me, which he never does longer than 30 seconds.  Today he seems better again.  He pooped pretty normal and did great at all three phases of Schutzhund.

I've never fed them, but they clearly don't mesh well with his system, so I'd say no more of those for him!! Glad he's feeling better though.

Is there any chance the tracheas could have been treated/poor quality in any way?

I'm sorry that your dogs didn't respond well to them.  My guys LOVE them, and don't usually have an issue.  They are WAY more popular than bully sticks over here.

I'm not sure, they were the dry kind, not raw.  Not sure what process is involved in making them "dry".

Thats what I thought as soon as I read your first post. How often do you feed raw? If you fed it more often ( 2-3 times a week ) then they should be okay with it. I wouldnt feed it together with kibble though. If you feed 2 times a day, one meal can be raw and the other kibble, or you could just feed it as a snack. Either way just make sure they are a few hours apart, raw and kibble dont digest well together.
