    Switching foods

I was just looking for some thoughts on this subject and what you may all think is a better food for a cocker spaniel.  I'm always hearing things regarding breed specific/size specifics and was just wondering.  They are currently eating Oven Baked Tradition, which they seem to be doing alright on but this food is getting harder to get.  I also can't seem to find opinions on this food and that sorta concerns me.  I also wouldn't mind getting something that has more bang for the buck.  Something with quality and a proven track record.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I would think, with cockers - something grain free would be the best option, with the ear problems and skin problems.

Maybe Orijen? I've used it - and really like it.

My dog is eating Blue Buffalo, and my foster pup is eating Halo Spot's Stew

I know the local pet store here sells the Orijen but I'm not sure of the other two.  I'll have to go up and check them out to see what she has.  Maybe if I post my options it might help some.

    Thanks

Yes, it would be very helpful.

I really like Blue.  Really like Innova too, but they priced themselves right out of my price range, and now Blue is trying to do the same thing.

But knowing what IS available where you are would certainly help us suggest foods.

So I went to check out the foods they had available and here's the list I made:

    • TASTE OF THE WILD
    • EVO
    • INNOVA
    • ORIJEN
    • ACANA
    • WELLNESS
    • SOJOS
    • HEALTHWISE
    • CANIDAE
    • CALIFORNIA NATURAL
    • OVEN BAKED TRADITION .....which they are currently on.  This food is baked!

Any thoughts?  I never realized how expensive some of these brands are!  They range in price from $50 to $70 for a 30 lb bag!  I'm also conflicted on the wheat/no wheat issue, high protien/low protein, etc.

    Thanks

No wheat. Easy answer, LOL. The other grains, like rice and oatmeal? Are more debated. My girls get oats and rice, in their kibble, and are doing incredibly well. I have decided on a moderate fat/protein level, and a simple food. It's not fancy. It doesn't have herbs and probiotics added, but I'd rather add my own.

The dogs say it's working great. They have lovely skin and coat (for the little bit they have, LOL), high energy levels, good endurance, they learn fast, and they feel good. All the brands you've listed are REALLY good food (maybe not Taste of the Wild, depending on how you feel about Diamond, and it's lower calorie than the others) that people have had good results with. What your dogs do well on... it's HARD finding something that works for everybody. When you do, I'd stick with it!

Thanks Jennie, makes sense.  I'd like to keep them on the Oven Baked Tradition but they are loaded with grains and plus I can't seem to find anybody that uses it and there's no user reviews that I could find.  It's baked also which is a good thing isn't it?

In any case I'm still trying to decide what to do.

We've gone through several foods with Molson. He breaks out in hotspots and gets anal gland issues when he has an allergic reaction. We've been feeding him Orijen 6 Fish and Candidae Grain-Free Salmon with great results.
