    Food for a puppy??

What is the best food for a new puppy...........it will be a small breed and I want to get the puppy started on good nutrition.

    Thanks

Wellness makes a 'Just For Puppy' line that I used to like - I've heard varying issues with their quality lately, though.

Solid Gold makes a formula called, 'Just A Wee Bit' that has tiny, tiny kibbles. My sister's maltese mix does well on it, but I'd double-check that it's appropriate for pups.

Check out dogfoodproject.com when you can - LOTS of good information there.

There are many excellent quality foods available.  Those are going to be names you haven't heard much.....Innova, Solid Gold, Blue Buffalo, etc.

I personally have been feeding Blue for a few years and it works well for my dogs.  I know they have a small breed formula, and I *think* a small breed puppy.  I've looked at the different levels and if I remember correctly, the calcium and something else were a bit higher for the small breed.

As a general guide, this is what I look for in a food....first ingredient meat, preferably meat meal, and this needs to be a NAMED meat, not the generic "poultry".  If it's chicken, turkey, duck, sparrow, I want to KNOW.  I look for no corn, wheat or soy, no grain fragments, no artifical colors or preservatives.

The two foods I personally like best are Innova and Blue.  Others will have other brand names that have worked well for them.

I feed a good quality, all life stages food to all of my dogs. It has worked out really well, for them. The younger dogs just eat more of it.

I feed PetGuard Lifespan. It's an all life stages food. I used it with baby bichons and toy poodles.  For weaning, I put it in a blender and chopped it up and then moistened it.  By the time they were 12 weeks they seemed to be able to handle it just soaked.  I'ts a medium sized kibble.

Otherwise I'd try Innova puppy or california natural puppy to start.
