    T-Bone's new diet (Acana)

T-Bone always suffered from loose stools, and after spending a few HOURS talking to the owner of a high end pet store, I decided to try Acana. Within a few days his chronic loose stool went away and he's picking up some pounds. It is 100% grain free, which I think might have been his issue.

I feed him the Pacifica formula, the fish is delivered fresh and never frozen and they use no preservatives. Here's the ingredients:

Salmon meal, russet potato, peas, fresh boneless salmon (source of DHA), fresh boneless herring, herring meal, pumpkin, fresh boneless flounder, salmon oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary), ground lobster shell (natural source of glucosamine), sun-cured alfalfa leaf, red delicious apples, carrots, turnip greens, organic kelp, organic bladderwrack, organic dulse, juniper berries, cranberries, Saskatoon berries, black currants, angelica root, chicory root, red clover, red raspberry leaf, dandelion root, peppermint leaf, marigold flowers, chamomile flowers, rosemary, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecium.

Vitamins (vit. A, vit. D3, vit. E, niacin, riboflavin, lysine, thiamine mononitrate, vit. B12, pyridoxine, folic acid, biotin). Minerals (iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, manganese proteinate, cobalt proteinate, copper proteinate).

He is doing really well on this! He really enjoys the taste, too. I don't enjoy the smell, but that's not a big deal. Does anyone else use it or see some problem with it?

That's great news for T-Bone!  My Willow had the same problem and I also switched to a grain free fish formula (Taste of the Wild Pacific Salmon) and her stool has been great ever since.  She's also gaining weight MUCH faster since the switch!

I fed this to Tootsie, when Orijen wasn't available. She did excellent on it, but Orijen has been having "issues", so I switched.

How old is T-Bone?  Grain free foods aren't generally recommended for growing puppies.

T-Bone is about 6 months now... definitely still growing. Do you know why they aren't recommended? Now I'm a little worried! His stool is much better but I don't want him to be lacking something

My understanding is that grain free foods are higher in calories and calicium then what is recommended for growing puppies.

I think that you're right, Sue.  The calcium:phosphorous ratio isn't right for growing puppies.

Acana has a Large Breed Puppy formula that might be better suited for T-Bone's needs.
