Dehydrating Liver

    Dehydrating Liver

Just wondering if anybody has ever done this.  I see at the local pet food store they are selling small bags for a couple bucks.  I made beef jerky for the dogs all the time.  Also just wondering about fruit jerky.....any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Johnny & Tessy

I haven't tried this yet, mainly because I heard that it stinks up the house for days and I don't know that I could stomach smelling liver in my house for days, but I know the girls would love it!

I've been imagining smoking liver/meat outside for the longest time .. but haven't come up with a good structural idea/plans. I do live in the boonies though ... can't imagine in suburbia that your neighbors would appreciate smoking liver in your backyrad, teehee.

I tried it last week and my dogs love it.  I bought a pint of chicken livers for $.57 and  dehydrated them in the oven at 170 degrees for five hours.  If I do it again I will have to do it when my wife is gone.  It drove her nuts.

I wouldn't say the smell lasts for days.

Usually I flash fry the liver in a pan liberally laced with olive oil.  Just cook til 'set' -- not done.  Let cool totally.

Dice into tiny pieces.  Spray a cookie sheet with olive oil Pam and spread them out.  I bake in a 200 degree oven for a couple of hours.

It's not dried at that -- just easy to handle (i.e., it's soft -- not crunchy)  Airtight container in the fridge.

    It is EASY.

Call me lazy, but I bought a cheap dehydrator from Wal-Mart.  I thin slice the liver, put it in the dehydrator out on our back porch & call it good!

I dehydrate liver, heart, sweet potatos, & apples very regularly.  My guys love them!

Yep...the good ole Wallmart brand dehydrator.  I picked mine up at Canadian Tire but I'ld imagine it's the same deal.  What an awesome purchase though!

I was just saying the other day that I should try the liver and just put it outside.  It's almost -20 here with the windchill so I don't know how good this would work.

I'll let you all know when I do finally get around to making it.

That is a WONDERFUL idea - I live in an apartment, do you think my neighbors would mind???

About how long does it take in the dehydrator??? Do you do chicken or beef liver??? Or both?

Last time, I think that it took around 3-3.5 hours.  I'm pretty sure that I could have done it quicker if I had cut the liver thinner.  I've used both chicken & beef, but I prefer beef.  It is, imo, much easier to handle than chicken livers are.

The smell wasn't horrible.  I'm not sure that the neighbors would really notice that it was dehydrating outside.  If they did, they'd probably just think that someone was cooking.
