    poop machine

Lately, my Zoey (JRT, about 2 years old now) has been pooping MORE than usual. i know that sounds funny, but in all seriousness our yard is filling upwith poops quicker than usual!

i've noticed it over the last month and also that she'd put on weight (altho that might be from staying at grandma/grandpa's while we were on vacation.... spoiled brat), and i asked my dad (who used to be a K9 police officer) and he said that it might be because her quality of food wasn't good enough. that if there's just fillers in there, she'll take what she needs from it and poop the rest. BUT, i hadn't changed her food. She used to eat Benefiber, and she pooped a "normal" amount of times a day. then she started going i'd say about 1.5 times to 2 times more often a day. so, i changed her food to Science Diet, and started using a measuring cup to be giving her exactly what the bag reccomended for weight loss (which is just slightly less than the maintain weight amount, since she was a little pudgy).... it's really the pooping that has me worried tho. she's been on the new food for 2.5 weeks now and still no change.

     any ideas???

I never go by the amount suggested on the dog food bag, it's always too much.  I would try her on a better quality food.  Science Diet, though expensive, is not really that great a food, unless your dog has special dietary issues.    http://www.dogfoodproject.com/   This has some helpful info in choosing foods.

I feed Evo to my big dogs and Innova to my JRT.  Your Dad is right about the size of poops in relation to the food quality.  I was so amazed at the difference when I switched to a better food.  In poop size and firmness AND the dogs overall condition is so much better.  http://www.naturapet.com/  This is the company that makes Evo and Innova.

it's weird kuz the size/colour/consistency has always been the same. just the frequency! it used to be that she'd go like 2 times a day, now it's everytime she goes out for a pee it seems!!

thanks for the website, i'm gonna check it out now. you get so overwhelmed at the stupid pet store trying to chose a new kind of food. i never even know what i'm looking for! i only bought a small bag of the science diet to test it out and buy me some time to do more research....

i appreciate your help! i'll let you know how it turns out (when's a good time to let things take their course? when can i assume that things should be in effect yunno? 2 weeks of giving her new food??)

Maybe something else is going on besides the food.....might ask your Vet.

this website is SOOOO HELPFUL! it was exactly what i was looking for. someone who's gonna teach/explain HOW to buy dog food and what to look for, not an AD for a specific kind! i was surprised at how much i caught on. i feel totally comfortable now looking at the back of a bag of dog food and knowing what looks good and what doesn't. and her list of foods and their ingredients saved me the time at the store reading the backs of a million bags (being harassed by the sales people "can i help you find anything?" 100 times!)

in the end i ended up choosing one that she didn't have listed, but with the knowledge i had i went on their website, read their ingredients and even found a coupon! i chose HALO, so we'll see how the pooping situation goes. Zoey LOVES it tho! i gave her a few kibbles from my hand when i first got the bag to see if she'd like it, and she followed me around the rest of the day till supper LOL.

thanks again JackieG for your help :)

I agree with Jackie - when we first got Charlie we were feeding him Iams and he pooped every time he went out - we are now on Innova and he poops once maybe twice a day, that's it.

Max poops a lot.  He sees the vet regularly and eats a pretty high quality food (Eagle Pack holistic) so apparently that's just him.  He goes at least three times a day, sometimes two or three times just on a walk. The vet says he looks great and his weight is fine, so I guess that the way his metabolism is.  I don't worry about it ... I try not to let more than one day go by without scooping or walking across the yard is like walking through a minefield. Smile

Only dog people would be discussing this!  Well, maybe horse people and new moms.

Best thing I ever did with my pooches was to go grain free.  I just love it, and they do too! (Although I'm not as picky with treats).

I mix 50% Chicken Soup For the Dog Lover's Soul (dry kibble) with 50% Innova Evo Chicken Large Bites dog food (dry kibble) and they just gobble it right up!  When I have to feed canned I feed Innova 95% Duck...but it's usually just for special occasions.

Their poos have been great since doing that, Ruby's allergies and sensitive stomach have been awesome, and I don't have to have the pain of worrying about mixing in things to get them to eat it.  Ruby is super picky...Stewie...well, he'd probably eat concrete if I put it in his dish.

I learned a ton about dog food and how to pick out the right kind for my dog before I found this site at www.dogfoodanalysis.com  it's fantastic!  It gave me a good way to compare foods, and I refuse to feed anything that's not a 5 star or 6 star food!  Luckily any unanswered questions I got answered here...but it put my mind at ease a bit.

Good luck! And keep us updated!
