    Nutrition Seminar Information Help

Soo...Petco recently has begun this new thing with making certain associates/managers take a super long (somewhat ridiculous) "nutrtion training" course so that we can be called "Nutrition Experts"  and honestly alot of it is incorrect from everything else ive ever been told!  Anyways, as a company nationwide, all petcos are to hold a free "Nutrtion Seminar" for customers on Saturday November 14th, and as a former dog trainer/dog training mentor, and now assistant store manager, ive been elected to do this lovely seminar.  So, like i said, alot of the info on our training, was complete OPPOSITE of everything ive ever heard, but of course it is partially sponsored by Eukanuba, so of course it has to make their food look good!  They go on about how corn isnt a filler and by products are necessarily bad, im sure the way its worded isnt completely wrong, but its very misleading, and reguardless, if i have to do the seminar, i want my information to be correct and not misleading.  So what are some good pointers i should bring up, or if anyone has any informational websites?  Of course the point of this seminar is to draw people into our store, and promote good food that you cant find just anywhere, or primarily you cant find at our biggest competitor (petsmart) such as Wellness, Natural Balance, and Solid Gold( i think those are the 3 that they dont sell), and i plan on talking about some of the better foods we carry such as those three, as well as Blue.  I plan to bring a couple of my dogs up (probably my APBT and my Akita since they have the biggest variety in coats, and beautiful muscling- although i know this has alot to do with genetics, nutrtion does play a part in this too)  I feed NB & they get solid gold tripe, but to be honest i dont know tooo much about the tripe, like how much IS recommended? ( i split 2 cans between the 4 dogs twice a week- usually a half a can one day split 4 ways, then a half a can the next, then a couple of days later i do the same), and is it safe for all stages?(which i have assumed, and do give it to all of mine ages 6 months- 6 years)

Thanks for any info or suggestions!

Well, at least you work for Petco, not Petsmart.  There is NO food in there that I would feed my dogs, but at least Petco has Wellness, Nat Balance, etc. Sure wish you had my favorite (California Natural) or second favorite (Taste of the Wild), but lots of places don't have those, so no big deal!  Anyway, the best site I've found on dog food is dogfoodproject.com.  In plain English, the author explains how to identify better products.  It's not terribly long, and very no-nonsense and objective, so it's a good read.  My neighbor is a human nutritionist, and she was feeding her dogs table food before one got sick and the vet suggested she feed (of course) Science Diet. She mentioned Yoda wasn't doing well on SD, and didn't like it, so I gave her the dog food guide on dogfoodproject.com to read.  It really opened her eyes, and she told me it was an excellent primer on dog nutrition.  (She should know, since she works for the Food and Drug Admin. as a nutritionist!  She has since selected Cal Nat and is very happy with it.)

I doubt you'll get any really heavy duty questions at the seminar. Most people don't know much about dog food.  I've been reading a TON of stuff about canine nutrition, food, allergies, etc. because of my allergic dog, but it has taken me months of reading to get to where I am today - and that is light years ahead of most people, I suspect.

I know corn gets bashed a lot, but in reality, I agree that corn is not really BAD - it's just not adding much of anything good - and if your dog is allergic to grains, it's awful!  I see it kind of like me eating fries and a frosty from Wendy's - some redeeming quality, but mostly just making me fat!

I have not fed tripe, so I haven't a clue about it.  However, one of my clients feeds it, along with a lot of other stuff (beef, pork, etc. - got quite a rotation going for her hunting dogs).  She feeds a whole can, just like she does the beef, etc.

No, Petsmart doesn't sell Solid Gold, Wellness or NB.  I'm not kidding when I say they literally have nothing I'd feed my two dogs!  They have a huge store and lots of brands, but it's all SD, Euk, Royal Canin,Nutro,etc.- ick!  Oh well, I should be nicer............

So, pointers?  Well, some people think the better foods are too expensive, but someone on a dogster.com forum computed how much it would cost to feed bad vs good food, and the differnce was minimal because you feed less of a better food. Even I was amazed!  Also, with good food there's less poop, since the dog actually uses more of the food and doesn't just eliminate it.....And, if you feed your dog good food, you just might see him live longer than if he eats crap....and you might have lower vet bills because he's going to be more healthy....

The prebiotics in Euk? Well, it took me a while to understand the difference between prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes, but that might be worth boning up on......although I'm not totally convinced yet that all dogs need all those things...but I could be wrong!

So many dogs, especially the little ones, seem to have allergies - I would let people know that some foods are better than others for that (like NB) and that if you suspect food allergies, you should switch to a protein that the dog hasn't eaten before.  A lot of people don't understand how allergies work - i.e., that you aren't born with them, you develop them after being exposed to them.

Sorry I've rambled, but just wanted to give you some ideas!  Email me if you want clarification!

I don't have any info for you except to say that it appears you'd better be careful :) ... the post above was pretty stern and it looks like one of your superiors has seen you posting?

Sadly, when big box stores talk about "giving info to correct the hype and prop." it means that they want you to say things like corn, fillers, preservatives, etc. are good/necessary/not cancer causing ... often misleading people to think the lower quality foods are acceptable.  Personally, with working dogs, the corn will often firm things up and is useful to use in some cases, it also makes the food more affordable. However, with my house pets, I'd never feed many of the foods that petco sells ... they have too many ingredients that are not healthy (that's not hype "Dogsrgreat", just the truth). Unfortunately, for the sake of your job I guess you'll have to stick with the script ... a script that apparently is not sending people to the "Whole Dog Journal list of foods" but rather towards the foods that the big box store sells. Hopefully the script they give you allows to you promote the foods you mentioned because those are just about the only decent foods Petco carries.

Just wanted to correct you- the nutrition workshops and the 5 hour nutrition certification training course was NOT sponsored or written by Eukanuba. Only the 1 hour Dog trainer course was sponsored by Euk. the nutrition training is intended to correct myths, dismiss the propaganda, and provide objective information for consumers to evaluate what is best for their pet. Our role is to not be negative. Always best to focus on positive selling and NEVER trash a brand.

I would strongly recommend that you closely follow the handbook for the nutrition workship, and not stray from the script. As a pet co employee, and nutrition certified associate, your role is to present the materials provided. Keep in mind that there is lots of room for you to make "personal product recommendations" to the brands you believe are best for a customer's dog or cat.

I'll stop by  your store Saturday and check it out. You may recognize me.:-)

This is why I would not want to work for a store that provides only one side of the nutrition story, the one that is supported by its product suppliers.  This post sounds like a threat from HR.

This post sounds like a threat from HR.

Doesn't it though? Wow when I read that ... I thought geez someone from higher up saw her post and will now be "monitoring" her presentation. She may have already been talked to regarding her presentation of the company online. scary... and very sad that they have to threaten regarding canine nutrition, what on earth are they scared of ... her giving good info lol? Makes me want to enver shop at the big box petstores again.

DogsRGreat, why didn't you just introduce yourself and offer to help put some information together for the presentation, instead of hiding and coming across threatening.  I sure hope you are not a supervisor, because you are showing poor management skills.

I shop at Petco, and in my resent search for a new dog brand, the store clerk didn't know much about the products except the price ranges. I would gladly have had someone express their personal opinion on the products available. Instead I relied on this forum to offer suggestions.

no idea who "DogsRGreat" is or how they know me, but it doesnt matter, since i do tend to agree with what everyone else has said, and i just cant get up at the store and preach about stuff i dont agree with...so ive decided on not doing the seminar!

sadly, this is also the reason i am not doing dog training anymore either...not that Petco is a bad company, but i just do not agree with all of their methods etc.

ah oh well....would love to know who you are DogsRgreat though?

Can this please be locked, as obviously this topic is irrelevent now, and i do not feel like getting harrassed by some "mysterious person that knows me" now.

    Thanks!
