    Going to Purdue; labs back

      Jessie's getting a dental tomorrow. While she's sedated the vet is going to examine her larynx to determine what's been causing the cough I had mentioned in the thread about her pancreatitis. She does a soft cough several times a day where she makes a blowing sound and her cheeks puff out a little. She also makes a sound that is similar to a loud belch ( best way I know to describe it); she doesn't make that sound everyday, but sometimes she makes it a few times a day.  That sound is always preceded by the soft cough. The vet has narrowed the problem to her larynx. There can be many causes for her symptoms; I hope it's just something caught in her throat; he said he removed a piece of grass from the throat of another dog with these symptoms. I'm worried that it's laryngeal paralysis and will require surgery to correct it. So, please send some of those idog vibes her way.

     I want to thank everyone for all your good vibes. My vet is fairly sure that Jessie has laryngeal paralysis;

     It takes a specialist to confirm this and do the surgery; my vet has already made a referral to Purdue and we have an appointment tomorrow morning. She did not get a dental because he didn't want to intubate her and risk damaging the cartilage but although she needs a dental her teeth aren't bad enough to cause an infection. He did blood work before anesthetizing her and her amylase and lipase are lower so that's good news; it means her pancreatitis has stabilized. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow; please keep us in your thoughts.

     Sorry to hear that the vet didn't find something simple, but you'll be in good hands at Purdue.  The vets and students at the clinic are awesome ime - good luck tomorrow!!!

    Oh Janice!  So many good vibes for you and Jesse.   On the good side, I'm thrilled to hear that her pancreatitis seems to be stabilized.

     You guys rock; thanks so much for the good vibes. She also has an elongated soft palate so it's possible they may shorten it surgically and not operate on the larynx. Apparently she's had the elongated palate since birth and it wasn't a problem until she developed the laryngeal paralysis. From what I've read an elongated soft palate can eventually cause laryngeal collapse.

     Stardog; You're right about Purdue. I've taken one of our cats there when he had cancer in his leg. They amputated it and he has done great; that was nine years ago. Jessie also sees a dermatologist there and it has really helped he allergies. Even though she's almost eleven she has lots of energy and is in very good health ( heart, lungs, kidneys) except for the pancreatitis so I'm very hopeful for a good outcome to this.
