    Panacur

anyone have any side effects of using this?
    • Gold Top Dog

Not usually -- it's pretty safe -- for you or the dogs?

If you'll email me -- I'm literally going out the door to the doctor, but I'd be glad to look it up in my Pill Book Guide to Medications for Your Dog and Cat (don't PM me -- but an email will remind me to check).  I don't usually need to be nagged but today has been ... stressful.  LOL

I've not heard of any major side effects, but a dog with lots of parasites, as in a major infestation, can go into shock when the parasites all die at once.  It's not common, but it does happen.

thanks ladies - he is taking it because the place I want to try doggie daycare says they have to have a course of panacur at least three days before attending.

I only asked because he has such a long list of allergies I always like to have a head's up on any potential reactions

    • Gold Top Dog

Willow's taken it a few times with no side effects and she has a very sensitive system.  As far as I've been told it's a pretty benign drug.

    From my PIll Book Guide:

"Fenbendazole --- ...related to thiabendazole ...

This group of drugs kills by disrupting the parasite's energy metabolism."

In short, it's used for more than it's actually labelled for ... used for things like lung worm and even giardia.

The only adverse side effect it lists is "vomiting" and that's classed as "rare".

Efficacy is *increased* when given with food.

Says it is well tolerated even up to 100 times the regular dose -- although some adverse reactions have been reported **but typically when used at those high doses**

Considered safe for puppies and lactating bitches.

    Considered safe for senior animals

Taken from "The Pill Book Guide to Medications for Your Dog and Cat" Dell Reference, last pub. 1998

I had Nikon on a double dose for 5 days when he was 7.5 weeks and it didn't even give him runny poo.

    • Gold Top Dog

nope - if anything, it helps 'firm' everything up.

I use it on every incoming animal - and have yet to have a problem!

According to this info, some dogs can experience vomiting or nausea after de-worming.  Poor guy.

    How's Bugsy feeling, Karen?

thanks for asking Lori - his energy has been fine but he didn't want to eat last night or this morning.  He has also consistently had one normal poop and one cow pie.

We finished the last packet last night so hopeful that by tomorrow morning we are past this - I will certainly know at breakfast time.  He very, very rarely doesn't want food LOL

Despite eating about a quarter of his breakfast he played with a buddy for about 2 hours of non-stop wrestling and running this morning and then was looking to go for a walk or bike ride so he must have just been a bit off food - silly boy

I am wondering if there is a flavor to the granules because you dump it in with their food and they eat it up - if it was a poultry flavoring that would do it

    • Gold Top Dog

I've never used the granules - just the paste... and the paste - well, is very chalky tasting... Embarrassed

I always mix it with some really smelly/tasty canned food
