Bumps on skin... allergies...Benadryll???

and chance  he laid down in an area with bugs? not like ticks, you would have noticed it, but i noticed when Ollie and I are on a walk and there are a lot of gnats etc around,he gets bit a little around the groin and inner back legs (i think its simply because thats where he has the least fur), and they go away in a few days.. they dont bother him too much, i dont even give him benadryl unless he seems to be worrying it (i dont want him to get a hot spot). i've actually noticed this a lot more this year, probably because it's been so wet and with standing puddles and the like, insects are going a little crazy.

Not really. He only goes for walks when outside...or just out to do his business.  I don't have a fenced yard...so he is not just outside playing or laying by himself.

It's important to remember down the road - allergies rarely crop up in puppies, and when they do it may be months before you have another incident.  You and your vet both will be glad if you jot down the exact circumstances surrounding this one - what it looked like, duration, pollen count, what you were feeding, what was going on in the household and his activities.  If he continues to have little issues like this, continue to keep a diary or if you are a geek like me, start a spreadsheet to record all the details.

    Good luck!

    GREAT IDEA....THANKS!

Janice...isn't it funny how your vet said one thing...and someone elses says something else.    Mine wrote down for his size which is 65 lbs right now.... 50 to 100 mgs every 8 to 12 hours.   The 8 to 12 hours seems so vague, along with the dosage.... 100 is double the 50...   I guess its depending on how much they need it. But Gibby isn't even scratching...doesn't seem to be bothering him...its just there.

    Big Smile  I DID!

I gave him Benadryl twice yesterday.... before work and then at supper.   He is on antibiotics once a day...had 2 of them so far.   Today his nose looks a lot better....and I kind of checked his belly...and it seems better but I didn't do a major exam on him yet. Kind of was up a lot last night sick ( me---not Gibby ) so I am kind of taking things slow this morning...don't have a lot of energy to put into talking him over to me and rolling him over in the right light....you know how THAT goes.

    Oh but I will soon!

*crosses fingers* i hope its helping!

and i hope you feel better too!!

Gibby is looking pretty good today.   His nose might have a little rash still on it..but his belly and inner legs seem really cleared up.   I haven't given him Benadryl in days.....only antibiotics.   I am thinking that I am not going to give him many more of them either. I know your supposed to give antibiotics until they run out.....but I'm not sure. This popped up so fast....... it might be something that just happened and will go away.

when Bugsy got those lumps that they decided were caused by an infection they explained that it was important to give all of it because you didn't want the infection to flare up again.  I would just finish it off and then he should be free and clear if it was an infection

You know, I do know that you are ALWAYS supposed to finish off antibiotics...in fact I just told a client that last week when he said his dogs problem came back after having him on them for a couple of days.... but now Gibbys ears are starting to smell a little ( they did NOT smell at all just a few days ago and I cleaned them just because he got a bath ) and I'm thinking YEAST. He DOES get a probiotic supplement and he even gets a spoon  of yogurt every day.  I just hate giving medicine.

I totally agree Dyan and when B had the lumps I wasn't convinced it was an infection - until the antibiotic cleared it - reluctantly I finished it off.  His was on his shoulder and just popped up one day and with his allergies I was sure it was an allergic reaction.  However it didn't clear and that is why I took him to the vet.

Timing is important with the probiotic and yogurt - I think it needs ot be 3 hrs after you give the tablet.  I would also clean his ears just to keep them from developing too much yeast

    Good luck

You're right Dyan; and skin infections can be more stubborn so I think it would be wise to give Gibby all of the prescription.

She actually gave me a refill on the prescription saying she thought he would need more.

The thing is..my exerience with antibiotics for skin and ollie....are questionable. BUT BUT BUT....I will try it and see how it goes.  I took him in so I will follow directions!

Jessie used to have skin infections before starting on immunotherapy and the vet would prescribe 2 to 3 weeks of antibiotics. It has something to do with only about 40% of it reaching the outer layers of the skin because of there being fewer blood vessels in that part of the body.

principles of effective therapy: choose the right drug and give for adequate period of time. we frequently see animals that have been undertreated. -dosage and interval for antibiotics -for superficial infection minimum duration is 21 days ** during this 21 days, we'd like to see visible lesions resolve. this could be on the exam. ask owners when lesions went away. if lesions went away on the 21st day, give 7 more days of meds.

Wow.....well it looks like his are all gone.......last to clear up a day or so ago.......he has enough for 7 more days I believe...tomorrow will be one week that he went to the vet.
