Sudden Blindness (Update 9/17/08) Vet Called Have 3 Options, Can you give me your opinions please.

I just turned on the computer about 5 mins ago was gonna look up something and Daisy was laying in her bed when I moved something and all of a sudden she got out of her bed with her head down and sniffed her way to the door which was closed and bumped into it so I called her to me because it was odd to see her do that and she turned back around and kept her head down and sniffed her way back to me bumped into the air purifier coming towards me.

Should I call the Emergency vet or wait for the morning I don't know what to do I am crying hysterically, anyone have this happen to them????? Don't know how or what I need to do to make things better for her. Any help thanks

Go to the vet as soon as possible. There probably won't be much damage if you wait till morning, but if there is any chance you can have her examined sooner, do it...

Good luck, and keep us posted!

My wifes guide went temporarily blind from a reaction to medication. Got her to the vet the next morning and took her off the meds. She regained her full sight in about a week. But there for a minute, we thought we would need a guide dog for a guide dog as we had the only blind working guide dog in the US. All turned out well.

Get her to the vet first thing in the morning, and be sure to let the vet know about any kinds of meds she might be on.

Around 5am it kind of seemed like she had her eye sight back I walked from the bathroom to the kitchen and she was laying on the flooring looking at me and followed me with her eyes, so this morning before I took her to the vet I was trying to see if she could follow my hand if I had it in front of her or even if I tried to throw something and she did now she can see?? Took her to the vet and he said maybe she had dirt in her eye or something but to make her go blind like that??? I don't know he said just keep an eye out on her which I am.

She's on no meds but could it be I added Missing Links to there food about 4 days ago thats the only thing new except for there food and she was fine laying in her bed until she got out of it suddenly and went to get out the room and walked with her head down sniffing her way to the door then bumping into it. Hopefully she'll be alright

Thank you both for the help.

There you go! She will be just fine! Now give her a kiss and try to calm yourself down...Wink

That was so scary; glad she has her sight back. I hope it doesn't happen again; will keep her in my thoughts.

One thing to note is that there are lots of blind dogs that do just fine.  They learn where things are located very quickly and stop running into them.  In fact, blind dogs do so well that owners are sometimes shocked to find out that their dog has been blind for a while.

See the links for blind dogs in this post:  http://community.dog.com/forums/p/31497/410303.aspx#410303

Thank you everyone yes it was scary hopefully it won't happen again, she didn't want to leave the living room last night and didn't want to get off the floor so I brought my blanket to the living put it under her and slept on the floor with her.

Think Lucky knew what was going on and how I was feeling because she came to me while I was sleeping on the floor and licked my hand 4 times then laid right next to me, she's been helpful since losing Princess she's always wants to me next to me since Princess passed. I had a few friends over and I was in the computer room talking and one of my friends were in the kitchen looking out the window and told me keep talking say anything and come look at this everytime I said anything Lucky stopped what she was doing and was looking for me, it even stopped her from going to the bathroom it was funny. Lucky follows me everywhere I go now. It's helped me alot tho.

    Thanks again for the help

I would make an appointment with a canine eye specialist to get a second opinion.

I agree; it's very important to know what caused this and it seems odd that this vet didn't want to do more tests.

Well it happen again yesterday I took her back to the vet he tested the pressure's in her eyes her bad eye had 64 and what was her good eye had 48 he said he wasn't sure if she'll get her eye sight back she has very bad glaucoma in both her eyes this time around he gave us 3 different meds two drops and a pill and wants to see her in a week, wants to see what her pressure's are and if they are still high he's gonna put her on a steroid, he is also referring me to someone in tampa he said no one around here is good enough so I am waiting on that call. Good news is her sight is back again. But he said either way we will have to put drops in her eyes for the rest of her life.

When he seen her last week her eye was all better she was able to see by then so there was no way of him telling something was wrong, but this time she wasn't able to see at all. So he seen exactly what I was talking about when I explained it to him last week, When he seen her a month ago there was no wrong with her good eye pressure was perfect color and size were perfect so he doesn't know why it happened to fast or even why it happened at all.

I asked do you think it's a tumor he said he doesn't believe so but you never know.  This vet is the third I've seen where I live, so if by next week she is still doing this and when he gets me the referral if I'm not happy I guess I'm gonna have to find a new vet, it's hard being in a small county not much around.

May I just ask how old is she?

I remember that our first dog (St. Bernard) got blind at the age of 12, but he lived 3 more years without bigger problems. The vets suggested a lot of things, but we never got the exact answer. The closest one was that it comes with the years...

I hope she will get better, but in case she doesn't, she will still be her old self, the dog you know. You will have to help her a lot, but it really isn't a big problem to have a blind dog...

Anyway I keep my fingers crossed!Wink

She's 12 years old, I asked the vet yesterday what other breed did he think she was we all know dalmatian is the most dominate he said well not to sure I said I was thinking beagle he then he said oh I see it now in her face he said his mom has a beagle and he said yea her face sort of looks like a beagles lol

I guess I will never know her other breed when we picked Daisy out of the litter all the dogs looked the same as she did none looked out of place all had spots and looked like a dalmatian so I don't know and some of her brothers and sisters had short legs and some grew up to have long legs as you can see Daisy has the short legs and I wouldn't change that, it's always a talker when anyone see's her people are like omg a dalmatian with shorts legs never seen that I'm like yea she's mixed lol some think she's a designer breed one time at a vet had a couple whisper that to each other.

Oh gosh, so sorry this is happening to her.  I know it's traumatic for you but take some comfort that dogs really do live in the moment.  Sudden blindness is harder on a dog than gradual but she will quickly adapt.  One of our Labs went totally blind but it took a few years and she still played fetch with the tennis ball!  Your dog will be able to adjust.  There are plenty of web sites to give you advice on helping her adjust.  Don't baby her too much over this, she won't understand why you are treating her differently and I think that is very confusing for dogs.

I would recommend, as others have, that you get her to a specialist.  I think a good Vet would always refer you to a specialist in a case like yours.

Good luck and smile like you mean it!!!  Your dog will know.
