Willow's platelets are low!

I took her to McDonald's drive thru after and she thought that was big fun!

Big Smile Lucky girl!  I'm sure she loved her fast food treat. I'm sorry about the weight loss, but try not to be alarmed by it. It's a small amount and if it continues, there are options available. I don't know how consistent Willow is, but both of my dogs vary by a few pounds at every visit. I hope the bloodwork results are positive but please let us know.

That is consistent with a jump in metabolism in a previously inactive dog.  AS she continues on the meds, you should see, if all goes well, an increase in weight.  Much of it will be muscle tone as she raises her activity level.  Her hunger will ramp to new levels then!  You might at that point consider milk thistle.  It would be ultimately up to the vet, of course, but after being on an immunosuppressant  for that long the danger should be minimal.

    Fingers crossed for the bloodwork!

Lori the others are right a little weight loss is not abnormal at this point,   I have always taken my dogs to the Mickey D drive thru after any sticks. They look forward to it ! And since we are still a pretty smallish town they no longer bat an eye lash over orders for K-9 burgers at the drive thru !

Many postitive and healing vibes for both of you!

Pirate lost weight too, initially, I think. He gained it *all* back, plus some :) He was at almost 24 pounds (ideally he's 18) when we were all done! I hope Willow's just getting used to the meds and plumps back up.

Pirate had a major case of the fuzzies while he was on pred - he was super-hairy!! And to add insult to injury, his entire belly was shaved. He looked so awkward! I'll try and find the pictures from back then.

And oh, the McDonald's runs. The specialty vet we went to for Pirate's 'stick' should have had one out front of their office, it would have been a gold mine. Every Friday we'd go for a blood draw, and then hit McD's on the way home for a kid's mcnugget meal - 3 nuggets for me, 1 for him.

Thanks everyone, I can't say enough how much it means for us to have all your friendship and support.

It makes me feel a little bit better that maybe the weight loss isn't uncommon..

UPDATE on Prednisone Puppy Chow. . .

I almost had a heart attack when the phone range at 8am and it was the vet!  I was thinking it must be bad since she's calling so early, she wants to see Willow, do more tests, for me to pick up something, etc.  BUT, she just wanted me to stop worrying.

140,000!!!!  And, the rest of the CBC is fine!!

She said she'd like her to be at 170, 000 before she starts to wean off so in two weeks she'll draw another CBC to see where she is.  Until then, she stays on the medication.  And, she wasn't concerned about the weight loss.  She said we'll keep an eye on it but really not an issue at this point.

Thanks again for the prayers and good thoughts for Willow.  I feel like God is really hearing them and watching over her these days.

Lori,  I checked in tonight just to see the update on Miss Willow.  What awesome news to hear that platelet count of 140K!  I would've sunk to the floor with relief.  The worry you've been experiencing has to be taking its toll.  I'll bet you'll sleep much easier tonight.  As for the weight loss, I'm sure that's nothing to worry about.  Besides, it's easy to fix with a few extra runs to Mickey-D's!!

I haven't been posting as often as I should, but I keep both of you in my thoughts each day.  I know Willow is in excellent hands with you (and Mike), but I hope YOU'RE doing okay through all this, too.  I know how it is to let everything go related to ourselves when our entire energy and focus is on our beloved pups!

Sending happy hugs to both you and Willow!

So glad that Miss Willow seems to be on the mend! It's so stressful when our pups aren't up to par.

I can sympathize on the weight loss. I've just now got a few more pounds back on Legend. But he and the pup are currently nearly the same weight

Yay!!! That is fantastic news and it sounds like you've got a great vet. It's nice when they take a personal interest in both you and your dog. I hope the next test shows even more improvement and you can start decreasing the Pred.
